It is rosa rugosa then. dixiegrrrrl Apr 2014 #6
More likely it's a Dr Huey. The leaves are too smooth for a rugie. sarge43 Apr 2014 #9

They eat the buds and flowers off of my dwarf rose bushes. Hell, they eat just about every thing.

At first I thought climbing don Juan, but a closer look it seems to be a floribunda rose...does it have a strong scent?

And what do you fertilize it with? It is gorgeous!!!!

After about 3 years the grafted shoots died and it sat dormant for a year.
Then the next spring the original root stock sprouted out and that's what it's done since. The only thing it's ever gotten is decomposing lawn clippings when the yard is mowed.

The original rose, goes back thousands of years.
Fragrant, right?
rosa rugosa is what is used for root stock, and often the rose that was grafted onto it may die, but that rootstiock has tap roots to China and nothing kills it. If it ever gets burned, or diseased ( unlikely) or overgrown, just cut it back to 6 inches from the ground
and stand back.
Most modern roses have rosa rugosa as ancestors.

I love roses yet have just a couple in my yard right now...that will change this year, I hope.

Your photos remind me of old fashioned black and white photos that have been hand tinted and made into postcards, and the colors look almost unreal. I looked for one with red roses but couldn't find what I was thinking of. This is a similar postcard-

I have a pink new dawn rose at the back of my yard. It starts blooming at the end of Spring.
