Another way of looking at travel wonders

My biggest regret is not travelling more - famous sites around the world, but step back and you might be a bit disappointed in that the drama and beauty somehow disappears in the reality of the world around it.

One thing you can't capture with photography is the feeling of actually being somewhere you've heard about all your life. So yes, some of those things are a bit of a visual disappointment when you actually go and see them, but the memories of the event stay with you for a lifetime.

Also I kinda like seeing some of these things from high above. I've been to Shiprock and Meteor Crater, but I've never seen either from the ground.

And have been to a few of those places listed.

There is still nothing like being there.

Stand at the Brandenburg and look down to the single metal rail that was the Berlin Wall. Look up and see a 5 star hotel next to a rotting soviet bloc style building. You can feel the history

Climb Gibraltar past the overgrown gun installations and look out over the strait to a hazy Morocco while monkey are doing tricks to distract you while others rob your backpack.

Both are much better viewed from afar.

I remember dragging my kids into the Louvre, fighting the crowds, and finally making our way into the hot, airless, packed room where Mona Lisa is displayed. My kids looked at the painting, said "Is that all it is?" and walked away.
