The DU Lounge
Related: Culture Forums, Support ForumsI'm new here, need a couple answers
I was at reddit, but the tykes kept getting in my hair, and, honestly, I'm too old for their crapola. If I wanted kids, I'd have had 'em years ago. That being said...I noticed that there are emotes and flair...next to submitters and posts. Please send me a link so I can educate myself. thanks.

(18,101 posts)between the post/reply title field and the message text field, there are a bunch of buttons. The last one is smilies. When you click that, a bunch of emotes are displayed, there are more if you click the (...) at the end. Click the place in the text field where you want the emote, then click the emote. You can play around with it by replying to any post and clicking preview instead of post.
If you want something to show up in every post you make, you need to put it in your signature line. There's a link to your profile at the top of every page. You can edit you sig line there.

I never bothered with reedit for same reasons. Life is too short and important now to actually SAY something
So, say it, doxydad

A HERETIC I AM
(24,371 posts)I've been a member here for 10 1/2 years, so let me give you a warning or two, if I may.
It doesn't matter which side of an argument you fall on, SOMEONE will be in complete disagreement with you, regardless of the subject matter. I suppose this is true for any message board, but sometimes the opposition can be vicious. If you say you like puppies, there are members on DU who would be willing to list 20 reasons why kittens are better and why you are a nimrod for not agreeing!
If you find you like it here, please be thoughtful in what you say and how you say it for the time being. I admit that I am skeptical of newcomers, as are many on this board, until it is clear you are "on our side" so to speak and aren't a troll or a troublemaker.
You are going to need a good sense of humor and a bit of a thick skin. If you have both, great. If you don't, I must say that this place can cut you. Sooner or later someone will say something to you that will make your blood boil and perhaps unleash a string of .....how shall I say....."choice" words at them. Just be mindful of the rules and the Jury System. Too many hidden posts and you'll likely get bounced. Laugh it off and move on, but don't get pushed around, either.
As with any message board with this many active members, you are going to run into all sorts of different types. Some you will feel an instant kinship with and some you will find as dopey as any you have ever met. But there are hundreds of very smart, very funny people on this board. Like life in general I suppose, it's best to concentrate on the good and forget the bad. The professions run the entire gamut, from airline pilots to truck drivers (like me), from MD's to Veterinarians to Nurses to home healthcare workers. Teachers, professors, artists, media personalities, musicians, machinists, members of the financial industry, farmers, cooks, bakers and candlestick makers!
There are many sub-groups and forums to explore, one for almost any taste or interest. Some are busier than others, so you may find that you are talking to only one other person or dozens.
Welcome! Enjoy yourself.

(14,881 posts)The Lounge is just a hangout place, so pull up a chair, pour yourself a cuppa something, relax and enjoy!
Also, if somebody consistently gets under your skin, there's a nice red x above that let's you put them on ignore.
