The Darvell Gathern

There was an image, a large idol made of wood, in Wales that was reputed to fetch outlaws back from hell. Hundreds of superstitious people flocked to it every year in pilgrimage. The image was brought to London and burned because it challenged the authority of the king. At the same time, an Observant friar named Forest was burned. He was accused of heresy and treason for denying that the king was the head of the church. The idol and the friar were consumed together in fire. According to the Welsh prophecy, the Darvell Gathern would set a whole forest on fire, and so it did.
