...so now my wife (54) and I can enjoy our hard earned savings! It seems I have been saving and working forever for this moment and it is almost here.
Somebody pinch me.
Congrats!

(34,115 posts)My husband and I decided when we got married that he would retire at 55 and we would live on whatever we had at that time. He had a heart condition that was not as easy to take care of back then. He is now 66 and has had heart surgery and is doing fine. If you can do it it is wonderful. I often feel really guilty that we were able to when so many will work until they die, my brother for one.
Enjoy your time and do some good, I know you will.

(4,734 posts)We are younger than you (44, and 46) and it is all possible by LUCK, ACA, and some hard work and frugal living!

(28,136 posts)...I refused to go into a lot of debt. I never bought a new car and focused on paying off the house. Also I stuck with a job (Public Service) for the defined benefit retirement although I didn't get rich at all. I ran large equipment for 1/3 of prevailing wage others got in the private sector.
I am glad I hung in there now. And glad I was an active Teamsters Union member fighting for workplace rights and benefits as they tried to shrink them...which unfortunately they did to a large extent.
Thanks for the well wishes!

(3,056 posts)I should be starting my countdown about this time next year. Thought I'd be doing it this June, but the kids at school have been so much fun this year, I decided to go back for another one.
Have fun!!! Any travel plans? Time to see the USA?

(28,136 posts)Trying to wrap my head around not having to go in after 24 straight years.
Oh we have travel plans so no worries about me just sitting around. I suspect I will be busier than ever... but in a good way now.
Love you all. Thanks for the kind words.

(54,426 posts)How do you retire at 57? I just turned 62, and can maybe see retiring some time in the next 25 years. In my line of work, most of us end up retiring horizontally, anyway. The funeral of one of my best friends was yesterday, and he was 59 when he conked out permanently about 10 days ago.
Still, you have managed somehow, and I hope you get to enjoy it for the next 57 years! And if not, then get started ASAP!
