Guess those old VW Bugs we drove in the 70s were a valuable lesson!

*SNIP* The young man must have put it in neutral, Meiches said. The car, she said, rolled up into their side yard because he could not figure how to drive a stick.
The lights were going off and on in the Dodge, she said. He was trying to start it. He didn't know how.
Meiches said she watched as he tried unsuccessfully to get the car into gear.
He just stayed in that car forever, Meiches said. I was on the phone with the dispatcher. *SNIP*
Seriously though: if he hadn't been so hell-bent on getting the car out of there, he might have used the gun on that family. They're very lucky no one got hurt. And for those of us who park our cars on city streets, makes me re-think about getting a manual trans. No joyriders would steal it.

(27,159 posts)I'm Gen-X and I can drive stick as can my brother and sister.
My sister's Millennial children can as well.
I think it's more of a dumb criminal who didn't know when to cut his losses and run.

(22,271 posts)I've driven a manual transmission since 1977. I drove a VW bug for 23 years, then I bought my current F-150 with a manual tranny in 1998.
Because no one was injured I find this story hilarious!
