The Devil's Arse

In Castleton, Derbyshire, Peak Cavern is also known as The Devil's Arse because of the flatulent sounding noise from inside the cave when floodwater is draining away. It was a haven for bandits and the site of a meeting between Cock Lorel, the leader of rogues, and the king of the Gypsies who together created a thieves' cant, a secret language. The name was changed from the Devil's Arse to Peak Cavern in 1880 so as not to offend Queen Victoria when she visited.
