Popular artists with no deep tracks
There are Dylan fans who swear that his best songs are "Blind Willie McTell" or "Every Grain of Sand." There are Stones fanatics who adore the tracks where Keith sings lead. (Ok...I'm the person who thinks these things).
Springsteen can release stuff like Tracks and The Promise because he always recorded enough great stuff for two albums.
But what artists are not worth exploring beyond the Greatest Hits?
The first name that popped to mind is Steve Miller, but I actually like some of his weirder, bluesier stuff.
I think the obvious choice is The Eagles. Greatest Hits, the entirety of Hotel California, and the title track of The Long Run are really all you ever need to hear from them. There are no hidden gems on any of the early records. There is really no late period so there's no song that deserved to be heard in the 90s.
Who else? I can see a lot of people saying Buffett, but I actually really like his early country folk stuff. His 80s stuff is nonsense of course.
