A single strike from an ash stick will kill a poisonous adder. If any other stick is used the snake will remain partially alive until sunset. Ash sticks nullify witchcraft and rheumatism.

Could this be why walking sticks are often carved from ash? (Other than the fact that it's a good hardwood for that sort of thing?)

It's one of the densest of hardwoods grown in temperate climates.
