(26,117 posts)But, I was a deadhead for a long time - I'm used to hearing multiple versions of live songs, and I always find things to appreciate about any live performance I hear.

(6,907 posts)because of the drum beat

(26,117 posts)I like the middle section of Echoes (from about 5:30 to 8:30) because it's a little funkier than the rest of the song.
Similarly my favorite part of Set the Controls is when the tempo increases and the intensity builds from about 3:15 to 4:40.
But for the overall song, the rhythmic undercurrent throughout the first half of Set the Controls puts that one ahead.

(12,723 posts)I have always loved Meddle.
The Live at Pompeii performance.
It is one hell of a great jam buried within semi-experimental music with lovely obscure lyrics.
That long gliding note near the end.

(34,137 posts)And no one I knew ever had any earlier Pink Floyd than Dark Side. Excuses, excuses!

(26,117 posts)I hope you've listened to Animals!

(34,137 posts)But I haven't heard much of their work. I guess I need to look up some of their stuff.
You see, the little town I grew up in didn't have a rock station. Lots of country western, no rock. And all my money went to my horse so I didn't have a radio of my own until well after I went to college. Even then, I didn't really start listening to rock until the late 1970s.
With YouTube and the internet I have discovered a lot of music I missed the first half of my life. And a lot of it is found through following links from DU!

(26,117 posts)I like some older country, like Patsy Cline, and bluegrass.
I like the group The Animals, but I was referring to the Pink Floyd album Animals.

(34,137 posts)I'm wondering why I didn't pick up Animals - it came out about the time I was getting into rock a lot. But 1977 was a complicated year for me. Got married, bought a farm, went on a long "honeymoon". I may have been too busy to keep up with the new music right then.
Yeah, I had horses - it kept me out of drugs while in high school. If I had gotten in any kind of trouble, the horse would have been sold - I sold my soul for that horse. My parents were really smart people!
Then as an adult I bred horses, ran a boarding barn, did all the work myself with some help from my husband. Horses are why I've had both shoulders worked on (the left completely rebuilt), both knees replaced, carpal tunnel and ulnar nerve relocation on both hands/arms. Oh, add a bad back and many, many other injuries over the years. I can't do much with my horses anymore, so I mess around on the computer, genealogy, needlework, etc.
