All his male kin were dead in what? their middle 30s?

For me it was Mays. He could beat you so many ways and he never let up.
The difference between Mays and Mantle was like the difference between two quarters: almost none.

What a great time to be a baseball fan as a kid:
FRobby, Koufax and Drysdale, Jim (Mudcat) Grant, Bob Gibson, Maris and Mantle, Teddy Ballgame, my personal favorite Ernie (let's play two) Banks, Billy Williams, Ted Kluzewski, Bob Allison and Harmon Killebrew, Zoilo Versalles, Little Louie at short and Nellie Fox at second, Bad Henry in left and Eddie Matthews at 3rd. And that is just to start with. Oh what a time to be a kid.

My childhood heroes besides mantle and Maris, quite different from the past 25 years of juice and jerks.

Especially In the bill james age no one will be allowed to steal as much as him. But Ricky, dammit, was amazing. People voted against Ricky for the HOF. That is screwed up.

Then again, people voted against both Greg Maddux and Frank Thomas. Stick your protest vote up your ass. These were two clean players in the steroid era who were dominant. But Maddux always said he was a scratch, and I count every stroke, and he likes to press. I repress.
