Just curious. I've heard people say over and over that this is a good way to cleanse the house. Anyone do this before?

Maybe I'll think about this first.

(11,797 posts)It's fine. Get good quality sage and it doesn't smell bad. Open the windows if you want (you might set off the smoke detectors anyway if you don't).

(11,797 posts)I grew up in an old house, where my grandpa died. I always felt weird there. Then I moved into a place in California that had an awful vibe. A friend suggested I purify the house. I did. It comforted me. I've done it ever since, including my last place, a civil war era home.

I don't think it smells bad but if you don't like the smell, you can always open a window later.
Salt is also good for cleansing. http://healing.about.com/od/smudging/a/epsom-salt-energy-cleanse.htm
You could do some research on other ways of clearing space.

(3,998 posts)Best way to cleanse a house is with soap and water...and bleach. I don't buy into mystical pseudo whatever stuff. Do it if you like the smell of burnt sage.

(6,795 posts)I much prefer the smell of Pine Sol to burnt sage.
Sorry, it smells horrible.

(585 posts)I like the smell of burnt sage myself, but if you find you don't like it, you can also purify by sprinkling salt around the perimeter of each room & across thresholds. Either table salt or sea salt, whichever you have handy.

(2,531 posts)After being introduced to the concept by someone who was doing it. Fresh sage smells wonderful (I mean fresh as in not old or stale), and white sage is a special different smell too. It is also used, among other things, in talking circles and in sweats. The ceremonial part of it and the power of intention and prayer can be a big part of the total experience, and in my opinion it matters alot that it be included. Having supportive friends with you during the process can be good too.
Lavendar added is nice. How about cedar added if you like the smell? Rose!

(14,881 posts)I smudged my farmhouse right when I moved in, but it wasn't until after the excavator's dump truck piston fell through the cab, and he swore he must have disturbed an Indian grave or something, plus a bunch of other freaky stuff happened, that I decided I needed to sage the entire property.
So I took my new, very nice, bundle of sage in a bowl, and walked the perimeter of my farm waving the purifying smoke around. As I reached the back of my farm I swore I could hear voices: men laughing that they were gonna "cut her down to size!" And then my bowl of sage erupted into flames! I ran across the pasture gripping my flaming bowl of sage in my fingertips, until I got to my horse's waterbucket, dropped the bowl on the ground and drowned it. My fingertips were pretty sore and my eyebrows singed.
I tried saging the back pasture 2 more times, and the new sage repeatedly erupted in flames, which I had to put out. Each subsequent bonfire was a little smaller than the last, and eventually I was able to just smoke the perimeter without all the theatrics.
That was 10+ years ago. I haven't tried saging since...
