the cartoon of babies being flown by pilots around an airport with the caption "let's get this baby off the ground". I was so sorry when Garry Lawson retired.

(41,991 posts)I loved The Far Side too, and Doonesbury used to be God, and Peanuts. I suppose that covers all the cool ones but there's something about C&H that just resonates with the twisted little kid in me.

(6,581 posts)Calvin and Hobbes was very good, too, but my local paper didn't carry it, so I only got to see it once in a while when I stumbled across a Detroit paper or an out of town paper somewhere.

(27,247 posts)then Bloom County would be No. 1, followed by The Far Side and Calvin and Hobbes (although Peanuts was by far my No. 1 in elementary school).
If you're talking about animated cartoons, then Bullwinkle gets the nod, followed by George of the Jungle/Super Chicken/Tom Slick, Bugs Bunny, Foghorn Leghorn and The Simpsons.

(2,299 posts)Once when I was taking a lab test in biology in college, I fell off my chair laughing at a Far Side cartoon. It was a test where the professor put different stations up and spaced them out with cartoons, and it was so embarrassing to laugh so hard, but I couldn't help it.

(6,539 posts)because their mom loved the Terry and the Pirates strip.
She also said her brother was glad that mom wasn't a big fan of Prince Valiant.

(719 posts)With "Doonesbury" in second place.
My favorite Far Side cartoon-- a picture of the inside of a refrigerator. In this fridge, you see a jar of jelly, a carton of milk, and assorted Tupperware-- all cowering in fear because of a large bowl which is wearing a bandit mask and holding them at gunpoint.
The caption? "When Potato Salad Goes Bad"

Their rolling waves seduce my heart.
Oh, how I want to graze in their lush valleys.
Oh, how I want to run down their green slopes.
Alas, I cannot.

(19,288 posts)For the far side. I loved those underground comics like the Furry Freak Brothers and Fat Freddie's cat. Very hard for me to get shops of them back in the day.

(6,163 posts)Remember those Baby on Board signs? The cartoon had a human size fly driving a car with sign saying Maggot on Board.
Another one I enjoyed and has forever changed the way I write my grocery list. A cat is peering into a dryer after following several crudely written signs pointing to inside the dryer saying "cat fud". You see the dog hiding and he is thinking "oh please, oh please".
That man is a genius and has a deliciously wicked sense of humor.
I noted online you can get a mug with the cat fud cartoon. I have to put that on my Christmas list.
