(3,995 posts)My daughter wants one, so she's been researching the issue. Apparently, there's a place near us where you can spend a few hours with a fox and make sure it's the right pet for you. I believe she said they can also be litter-box trained.

(3,818 posts)I read somewhere recently that said that foxes could be domesticated after 3-4 generations but this article says that those are only tamed foxes and that domestication is something that occurs at the genetic level. I agree, a fox would be a cool pet, especially an Arctic Fox.

(28,273 posts)The privilege of seeing them in the (more-or-less) wild is enough for me; as beautiful and cute as they are, I don't imagine them to be house pets.

The website where you could get one before was http://www.sibfox.com/ but it doesn't seem to be working.
This is the history on it:

(56,177 posts)It's just that very few people have done it thus far...they are cuties, but I'd worry about them around other pets, such as cats.

(70,222 posts)a kid in my neighborhood had a pet skunk. i always wanted one, but knew that was a big commitment because of my friend.
but there is a long running genetic experiment in russia using fur foxes. they sorted them by temperament, good and nasty, breeding sweet to sweet and bad to bad.
it took 5 generations to get a sweet pet, but the amazing thing was the way that appearance became unhinged at 8 generations only for the sweet. black foxes split into white markings much like border collies.
my dad always wanted to find me a pet squirrel, as he had a pair as a kid. sorta glad he never did. i hate the little bastards, and have had to deal with a few problem dudes.
