(51,122 posts)It's been running 24/7 in our house for several years. Quiet and effective.
They come in three sizes. We have the big one: FAP03-RS for up to 350 square feet.

(51,122 posts)You have to clean every surface and fabric they come in contact with.
You can only cover up what's left over in my experience. We have a little dog and two cats.
The description at Amazon says: 'Better than HEPA at capturing airborne particles--99.9 percent of large airborne allergens like pollen, mold and dust mite debris'

(21,046 posts)They have those at mold-kill.com They don't filter the air but kill germs and make it smell fresh.
There are several small air filters that are good.

(50,130 posts)She has been smoking for 75 years, so she's not going to quit. She's now 91. She's lived in her current place for 20 years, and everything is permeated with smoke. The health care aides don't really like coming there. I wonder if a filter of some kind would be a small step, but effective.

(21,046 posts)You also need to wash down the walls and all hard surfaces with a damp rag to get the brown residue off everything.
They have small ozone units at www.mold-kill.com. Lots of information there.
I have 2, a small one for tabletop use, and a big one by the intake to my AC/heating system.

(225 posts)Re my pulmonologist. I don't know whether some machines can cover up the smell, but the particles are too small for any filter to trap.

(12,325 posts)that it looks like I got my work cut out for me.
I'm looking easy to keep clean, quite while running on the high feature, can cover my living area and something that won't break the bank.

(22,845 posts)We bought one in December for about $329 and it worked so well that we bought a second one.
It's the Blueair 203 White with HEPASilent filter.

Normally I hate to spend that kind of money, but we all have bad allergies to dust, mold, pollen, etc. I have asthma during the tree pollen season, and my husband catches bronchitis at least once a year. One daughter is allergic to cats. We have two cats and two dogs, and all shed like crazy.
The air cleaner works so well that, even though my tree pollen allergies normally start at the end of December, I've gone through all of January without needing my asthma inhaler. These inhalers cost $$.

(17,600 posts)I'm sensitive to noise so I only put it on "turbo" when I'm not going to be in the room. "Low" is very quiet, and "Medium" is fine if I'm in the room.
Allergy Buyer's Club has it:

But I bought mine from Kohls.com because I had discounts there so I ended up with a great price.
The filter cartridge sounds expensive but you only have to replace it once a year, and it replaces all the filter stages. Except for the HEPA you can (and should) clean the other stages more frequently. It's very easy to access the filters to do this maintenance.
I can find something to complain about for just about anything I buy but this has been a pretty sweet purchase.
