My great aunt told stories about her family's Chinese laundryman. (San Francisco was a very apartheid community then, and the Chinese were excluded from many sorts of work.) The laundryman used to give her and my grandma candy so they were always happy to see him.

I imagine the Chinese communities of San Francisco looked similar to your pictures then, with much commercial laundry hanging out to dry.
