(12,132 posts)knowing the thing at the shoe store for measuring your feet is called a Brannock device?
And that it not only measures foot length and width but also arch length (but in all the years I've been buying shoes I've never seen a shoe store employee use that arch part - mostly, even if he or she did, it wouldn't matter unless you were getting bespoke shoes made.)
as for OP - I am 50 years old and every year on my birthday I have birthday chalupas. I've been having this as my birthday supper for as long as I can remember. I have chalupas periodically throughout the year because they are easy to make and I love them BUT on my birthday I only make them the way my dad made them for me when I was a very young boy. The whole thing is just a fried, flat corn tortilla, a layer of refried beans, a layer of hamburger, a layer of shredded cheese and lettuce and sour cream.
But, when I was little, refried beans and cheddar cheese were too exotic for me so my dad made them for me with Van Kamp's Pork and Beans - he mashed them up so they would spread and stick to the tortilla - and american cheese. This was back when you could by the packs of American cheese that were not individually wrapped - they were still slices but they were all stuck together and he'd take the brick out of the wrapper and run it through the grater for me because the cheese melted better all shredded up.

Just got to computer so haven't been tuned in today, but does DU think this will sink his presidential aspirations? Reading some threads b4 hitting the sack.

(961 posts)that I wear. Most recently while chopping ice from the sewer drains in front of my house (dorky as well).
I have been known to dress as a garden gnome while doing yard work and when camping, my gnome can be seen wearing ankle length plaid granny skirts as he gathers wood and does chores.
I have over 500 12" action figures that I use in my art work. They range from vintage GI Joes to Star Wars characters to a Moses that quotes the 10 commandments.
fizzgig
(24,146 posts)and i'd be totally down for plaid granny skirts around the house.

(961 posts)going shopping (even the gnome would go out and about town!) However, in backwoods upstate NY... big problems! As a guy up here I keep my plaid on the shirts! lol
As I type this, my partner and I have vowed upon our return to Portland, that we will relieve ourselves from mundane clothing and only go out in fabulous works of dorky!

(9,527 posts)including salvaging old computers, I still have Magic the Gathering cards, I listen to podcasts on subjects I know nothing about just to learn about them, I read fantasy novels, I keep a list of the books I have in a spreadsheet because I got tired of buying duplicates, I wear comic book tshirts and I'm teaching myself computer coding for fun.
So yeah, I'm pretty much a nerd.

(24,146 posts)i've watched star trek deep space nine, battlestar galactic, fire fly and star trek voyager all in about the last six months and just started dr who. i have all the action figures from the original x-files and sleepy hollow movies and wear star trek, harry potter, goonies, bob ross and fifth element shirts to work.

(12,154 posts)but only because I haven't found great-grandma jeans for sale anywhere.
I have some stylish mid-rise jeans, and they do look nice, but I feel stupid wearing stylish jeans at my age, so I wear them just around the house.

The Velveteen Ocelot
(115,735 posts)In fact, my doing something makes it become dorky. I am a vast black hole of dorkitude.
To name a few things: I wear mukluks in the house and crocs outside. I wear mom jeans because I'm more comfortable if my inner tube of flab doesn't lop over my waistband. I do all the crossword puzzles in the newspaper. I still say things like "far out" and "groovy." I belong to an early music vocal ensemble ("early" being before 1700). I have a book about the biology of turtles.
fizzgig
(24,146 posts)but i do giggle when mom says far out. i also have a few pairs of mom jeans for the same reason.
i don't see anything dorky about doing the crossword, keeps your brain nimble.

(8,310 posts)this hat.
Since I'm 65 I do get some odd looks. But, since I'm 65 I don't really give a hoot what anyone thinks. It's the warmest most comfy hat ever and I love the mittens at the ends. Genius!
that is a great hat

I also spend waaaay too much time, reclined on my bed with Ralphie Marie, reading DU and commenting with my finger on this phone.
I love those elf slippers above, BTW.

(6,154 posts)There are, what is it 5 generations of them now? And each generation has 2 or more games associated with it. I've only played heart gold which is a remake I believe of red.
Jamaal510
(10,893 posts)and so far I've played both Stadium games, all of R/B/Y, all of G/S/C, both FR/LG, all of R/S/E, Pokemon Colosseum, Diamond, Platinum, both HG/SS, both B/W, both B2/W2, and X. I haven't gotten into the metagame, though, because it seems to just be people using the same 20 or so Pokemon instead of their favorites.
BTW HeartGold and SoulSilver are remakes of the G/S/C games, with all of the Crystal-exclusive features and more. FireRed and LeafGreen are the remakes of R/B/Y

(6,154 posts)Geeky, dorky, nerdy girls aren't as common. Though I must say I love nerdy girls ! if you say your a guy with certain nerdy traits people don't bat an eyelash.
As for me personally? Hmm...
I'm a computer and electronic gadget nerd. I keep up with the latest developments in hardware and have built my last 4 or 5 computers.
I'm a fairly big sci-if fantasy and comic fan. Though I'm not as extreme as some/many. I have watched every episode of ever Star Trek series at least once, though it's been a long time since I last saw one. Never been to conventions and the like.
I'm a science nerd, I try to keep up with the latest science news and breakthroughs.
I'm a video game geek. Love computer and console gaming. I have a special place in my heart for vintage video game stuff. NES to N64 era especially, and the arcades as well.
