What extreme measures have you taken to prevent hypothermia, frostbite, loss of your own extreme measures....?
They are saying in Jax Fl that we could be in the low 20's. That's nothing for North Dakota, but that's End Of Times weather for down here.
What have you done to stay warm?

(30,947 posts)It is predicted to be in the teens by Tuesday with a high of 26. We have had single digit cold weather temperatures, but usually not until February, which is our coldest month.

(115,836 posts)and we just keep doing what we were going to do in the first place. They are closing the public schools on Monday, mainly because of the buses and not wanting kids to be standing around outside. Otherwise it's business as usual. It's cold, but manageable if you wear enough clothes. It used to be a lot worse 30 or so years ago.

(229 posts)Had to use a lot of Heet though and keep the car plugged in. Lived up there for six years.

(10,109 posts)Going to be -4 Monday plus wind, wind chill warning says -20 to -40, will be fun standing and waiting for the bus to work. I guess I will layer it up with as much as I can get under my coat.

(63,912 posts)Today is the second day on the job of our new mayor, the first woman mayor of New Haven in its LONG history! She had the plows out early and so the local newscasters were reporting the big news that you could see lots of black areas on streets...how can that be with all this snow????
They're getting desperate for something to talk about...

It's going down to 13 below zero tonight.

(115,836 posts)are in an area that isn't insulated. Before I did some remodeling there was a spot in my basement near the outer wall where the pipes to the bathtub ran, and one year they froze and I couldn't get any water until I went down and blew hot air on them from a hair dryer (fortunately they didn't burst). If you have no way to wrap or insulate those pipes leave the water running a little bit; that way they won't freeze.

(72,300 posts)The kitchen cold water comes out warm at first so I'm going to guess it's wrapped.
I just checked the cold water tap in my tub and in the sink. It's cold water so I left those two dripping just a little bit.

(30,947 posts)I had my pipes freeze one winter when the temperature hit the teens. Fortunately, they did not bust. But I know that trick well now. Our temps have been freezing or below freezing. By Tuesday, we will dip to about 13 or less with a high of 29 here in North Georgia.

(72,300 posts)We had a large puddle out back for months.
I did turn two taps on in the bathroom.
Tonight will be the coldest one in the 7 day forecast.

(10,952 posts)drip my faucets, have an electric heater turned on facing underneath my kitchen sink, have the pipes in my crawl space wire wrapped and plugged in and have an electric heater running under the house near my kitchen sink pipes, and last my not least, turn the temperature up on my furnace at least 24 hours prior to the temperature plummeting. That is about all I can do. It is all about keeping my kitchen pipes from freezing.

(38,445 posts)I talked to my brother about his first job in Saskatoon in Canada. (In the mid 70s) He said that the real temperature there gets to 40 below zero. They do not measure wind chill, waste of time. Warmth in the winter is Zero.. Cars need to have their engines bored into to have heaters installed. The hook ups are free, provided by the city, so when you park at a meter, you hook it up so the car doesn't freeze. His first purchase, he told me, was this incredible down coat to wear in the winter. I guess it is all relative as to where we live.
I talked to someone the other day in Florida, and they say 45 degrees is extremely cold in Tampa/St Peat.. I will gladly take 45 in the Chicago area in January..

(13,877 posts)to the uninformed or other-informed. It's tough to "prove" the warming in terms of 2-3 percent increase in global heat and without scientific data, it doesn't seem all that bad. Even the melting of the Arctic regions doesn't mean that much to the average person. But everyone can relate to Climate Change. Well, reasonable folks without a political agenda, at least.

(6,154 posts)I don't think it will make a huge difference. I totally agree with you 100% but the global warming deniers are already denying it in the face of overwhelming data, a name change won't make them change their minds.

(13,877 posts)and just dismiss out of hand, along with the RW political convenience factor. You know, scientists, schmientists.
In my family we have both sides well represented and many are in the Midwest. There is basically no disagreement that the extreme weather they see everyday on the news is happening, it's worse and that it is affecting them or theirs. Two massive tornadoes on the same small Oklahoma town...major drought...ice storms...record highs and lows.
As we here well know, when it hits "Me or Mine", the RWers tend to "get it".
There's still hope.
