(41,991 posts)Near the end of her life they asked what she thought was the most important advance made during her lifetime, expecting airplanes or cars or some such. Her answer was "Indoor water." I think you can't appreciate how much of women's' lives has been spent carrying water until you give it some thought.

(38,445 posts)Basically, it says, that the advent of purified water to drink through indoor pipes, and modern sewage systems, (flush toilets) have done more to lengthen and improve people's lives, then all the medical advances put together. I don't know if it is true, but we take so much for granted here, until something happens that removes these important advances.

(182,878 posts)The 10 mile trek to get water with two oxen was a part of daily life. It was a really boring documentary to tell the truth.
Paul o'Neill also discussed this in "the Price of Loyalty"- he went with Bono to Africa. O'Neill mentioned that a team of backhoes and some PVC pipe could make a huge difference but there is no money in that so all the contractors want to build water systems big enough to service Cleveland.
