(6,154 posts)Christian Bale and Bradley Cooper surprised me with their acting shops. I knew that both had some talent but up till now I thought of them more as action stars or pretty faces. And wow Amy Adams! I wasn't around in the 70s but this strikes me as one of the best period recreations I've seen in a long long time, maybe a bit excessive in places but that speaks more to the character of the whole movie.
Moral of the story, learn to be satisfied with who you are, what you have. Reaching for that golden ring in order to prove something to yourself, to validate your existence, can only lead to disappointment. And when you are in over your head, stop digging!

(73,631 posts)She was much more than the standard Girl Friday roles that she usually plays.
If this movie was made in the Seventies, I think that Elizabeth Montgomery should have gotten the part. Give her some serious meat to chew on.

(6,154 posts)About time she started getting really good roles like this. Hopefully we will see more really serious stuff from her in the future.

(22,434 posts)but as much as I LOVE Jennifer Lawrence....she was too damn YOUNG for that role.
So was Jeremy Renner.
The other three were perfect. I was totes impressed with Bradley Cooper,
he NAILED the persona of a loser who thinks he's moved up a notch.

(15,224 posts)I cracked up at the bathroom scene. I don't know WHY...but the line uttered by the one woman waiting was simply superb IMHO! (Don't want to spoil it by writing it here.)
The whole movie - very well done!

(448 posts)I thought ALL of the actors were amazing! I'm such a movie fanatic, I'm so energized when I see something this good. Some of Jennifer Lawrence's lines were just classic...and Amy Adams....OMG..one of the best performances I've ever seen, ever. Christian Bale and Bradley Cooper are now, IMHO, two of the best we have. And the music was fabulous. I downloaded Dirty Work by Steely Dan from iTunes as soon as I could.
