You can sign for a free trial offer too. Everything was flat fee. No hidden fees. I use it free through my university library paid through tuition. It is a great resource.

flat fee, although if you want to do international searches it's a bit more.

After I had pretty much exhausted the searches for my US ancestors (like to three generations back) I had to pay more to search Canada.

I never did find anything much that way, but you can post to the surname groups, and if you're lucky, you can often find relatives with more information. I found some cousins I never met before that way. One of them gave me family info going back to the 1600s in France.

That gives me basic access, I have my tree posted, etc. Then I
use the connection through our university library, where they have
the full access package. I screencap and print what I need. The
past few days, I've found census records, coroners reports,
family photos that others have posted. Been having a blast.

$29.95 a month for world coverage...but I've rarely ever used any records outside the USA.

Cheapest possible entertainment .... I've literally spent over 160 hours some months when I was in a hot streak and had the time.
And that entertainment is also useful and has lasting value to be shared with everyone...including the NEW family members I met through Ancestry.

I absolute love it. I've been using it for 10 years.

It is kinda of addicting but I love doing research. You find out surprising things about your ancestors.

And it was very easy to cancel when I decided to stop using it.

And the site is terrific, honestly. Easy to use with an intuitive interface.

I found out more about my family and our history in a few hours than I'd been told in my entire life -- I have heretofore unmentioned Portuguese blood, some of my ancestors were the guys who founded the township that became Boston, and I'm vaguely related to Lucille Ball.

I met 2 distant cousins that I wouldn't have otherwise and as a hobby it's the most interesting project I've ever done. As other posters have said there are no "hidden" fees. I hope to stabilize my finances enough next year so I can rejoin and get deeper into the census'. The most frustrating thing was the fact that the 1890 census was lost in a huge fire and only parts of it have been saved-and that's the census I need the most.

several years ago, and found interesting stuff. I canceled my membership after that. As someone noted, libraries often have free memberships. I'm not sure how cumbersome those are; at home, I downloaded a lot of documents to save offline, which might be difficult with a no flash drives library setup.

You may find other sites that are useful. Denmark for example, has its parish registers and censuses scanned in and online.
