Fact: Most Disney movies are horrible and not for children

Some woman wants to make a coat out of puppy fur.
A circus elephant is whipped and chained for standing up for her kid with big ears.
A deer gets shot.
A lion gets killed.
A fish with a bum fin is lost after his mother and hundreds of siblings are eaten.

And this is just the ones that I've seen this week with my daughter.

of the mother, or sometimes both parents, because this is the child's greatest fear.

The tales allow the children to eventually triumph over their fears/persecutors.

Most feel empowered.

Sorry, I was brought up on Disney and I still enjoy the full-length cartoons. Lady and the Tramp is my favorite movie.

Try reading the original Hans Christian Fairy Tales. 10x crueller, bloodier, scarier. Not that all Disney films stem from them but many certainly would have drawn inspiration and both were aimed at kids of their respective generations.

I think Disney's fault isn't in finding a way to express those very real life/death things that kids really do worry about all by themselves, but in the limited ways they show to live and the stereotyping of, well, everything. But they're not stupid and though I know they have a ton of faults they are making some efforts.

It's an old and true trope that almost all fairy tales begin with the death of the mother. It's the fear of growing up, having to take on too much too soon, of survival itself. We all have to work those things out. If you're okay then watching them with your daughter, in safety, it gives her a good chance to view fearful things from a safe distance.

really got over Bambi.

OMG. Even now, I'm sitting here thinking of that movie I saw more than 50 years ago, and tears are welling up in my eyes!!

another Disney movie that traumatized me, even though it turned out OK in the end...

"The Incredible Journey"

which started out as a book, although I never read it.

I've always loved animals, and I absolutely can't stand it when they're hurt or afraid or worse. So when those two dogs and the cat got lost and had to find their way home after their owners moved, it just ripped my heart to pieces. I was 11 when it first came out.

It's always a cutesy-poo heroine or hero, with a bunch of anamorphic animals or anamorphic object sidekicks who break into song at the drop of a hat. Even the Pixar stuff is mostly the same way.

REAL American animation was the classic theatrical shorts of the 30s-50s. Looney Tunes, Merrie Melodies, Tom and Jerry, Droopy, Tex Avery's shorts. Yes, they were violent, irreverent, and unfortunately they HAVE been censored for television AKA neutered by certain people.

Americans are narrow minded and think all animation should appeal to, and be suitable for children. But, as one director of the classic Looney Tunes said back in the 1950s "I make these films for me."

The best animation in the world is Japanese. They consider it a real art form, and make it for all ages.

Disney films are meant to appeal to children as well as their parents. And without a certain amount of conflict, any story is just blah.

I also like the Lion King; the rest I don't care as much for, although I don't DISlike them.

I had forgotten what that movie was like, so when my kid was little I ran out and bought it as soon as it was available. I forgot about all the smoking and the drinking and the gambling and the vandalism and then my favorite part...all the little boys' heads turn into donkeys. Could never figure out how to explain that they made asses of themselves.

I also had an extremely difficult time explaining that Dumbo gets drunk. Because my child had absolutely no concept of what being drunk was. Usually, I just fast forwarded through the pink elephant scene.

The wolf, disguised as the grandmother, tricks the young girl into eating her dead grandmother and then the wolf kills and eats the girl.

They are mostly wonderful and great for children.

Monsters Inc, Finding Nemo, and Toy Story are some of the more recent great ones.
