Tsar Alexander III sentenced an innocent man to exile in Siberia; essentially a death sentence.

His wife, the Tsaritsa, discovered the truth of the man's innocence, and petitioned her husband to pardon the man.

The Tsar sent her a curt note: "Pardon impossible, to be sent to Siberia."

The Tsaritsa moved the comma so that the note now read: "Pardon, impossible to be sent to Siberia".

She showed the note, in the Tsar's handwriting and bearing his offical seal, to the judge of the case. The judge set the man free.
