4. We do this in my family.

The notion of wasting $20 on a "nick-nack" that will gather dust drives me crazy. So we all buy each other lotto scratch cards. Usually we win about $100 overall, and we spend about $200 so its a net gain to the state. but we laugh a lot and all share the craziest thing we would do if we won the top prize. It makes for some fun and we consider it a donation to the state. Collectively we are up because about ten years ago someone won $1500. I think it was my sister, but I could be wrong.

Around here you can't buy a small empty lot for less than a million. But then if you are willing to be a little creative, willing to move, and have some financial restraint a mil can still set you up for quite a while
