The cause and the location of her death were unclear, her publicist Kristen Foster told the AP news agency. A family spokesman confirmed the news.

Regarded as one of the most celebrated female acts of all time, Houston also enjoyed success acting in films such as The Bodyguard and Waiting to Exhale.

But her later career was overshadowed by drug use and her turbulent marriage to singer Bobby Brown.

The peak of her success came with a string of hits in the 80s and early 90s.

die and take with them their incredible talent. RIP Whitney. You gave the world an incredible set of songs, and a fantastic voice to sing them with.

May we always remember them when we hear them.

She had been strikingly beautiful, but she was wasted physically to a small, grotesque caricature of herself. The worms of every kind of excess – drugs were only one – had eaten her ...

Gilbert Millstein of the NYT, as quoted in the sleeve notes of The Essential Billie Holiday in 1961

Both Holiday and Houston were brilliantly talented women who died in their 40s. Neither could quite come to grips with their demons.

RIP

And pissed it all away. Incredible voice, fame, money ... On her last comeback tour she couldn't sing. Lost virtually all of her fortune. And traded fame for tabloid notoriety.

Damn shame.

I wish people understood that drug addiction is truly a disease. Really, do people wake up in the morning and say "I want to be a
drug addict?." R.I.P., Whitney. I know you have finally found happiness. I just wish I didn't feel so sad

for three years. She was to receive $450,000.00 per night. When the reps from PH saw and heard her they cancelled the contract. Apparently her voice was shot and she was wasted physically and emotionally.

What a shame.
