looks like the sun has reached its earliest setting time

of the year. 1635 in my neck of the woods. It will be like that for a week or more.

So much darkness to enjoy! Split with the lights of the stores and the laughter of friends.
and soon the return of the sun. maybe there should be a holiday to celebrate the return of the sun

Getting through December and gaining sunlight is a good feeling. November is always the worst month.

3 or 4 days after the solstice the ancients were finally able to discern the days were getting longer.
It was a holy time in most of the mythologies of the time.

Sunrise: 7:05 AM

I celebrate the sunrise each morning. My mood improves with the additional minute of sunlight right up to Spring.

We were there in mid-November and I noticed it was dark before 4:30PM.

When we lived in MO and NE I used to take my kids to visit my
brother and his kids (who lived in Iowa City for many years) at Christmas. We enjoyed seeing all the
holiday lights around Iowa City.

And the latest sunrise is January 3.

The explanation is interesting: http://www.sciquill.com/analemma/page2.html

I always wished the sunset would get earlier and earlier until the solstice, but it doesn't happen that way.

we lose morning rise time clear up to Jan. 8
but the sundown starts coming later beginning the middle of December.

When you look at the sunrise / sunset charts it is not hard to see where the various holidays came from.

will stay there until the 12th, then we start gaining minutes.

Unfortunately were still losing daylight in the morning. The pivot point will be Jan 8, with real progress starting the 16th.
