But I'm wondering what the John Hurt war doctor means. It looks like the Doctor is one regeneration closer to the end than we thought.

So, who knows if he counts as an incarnation of Doctor?
If he is an incarnation of the Doctor, then that means Peter Capaldi's Doctor will be the Valeyard, since the Master said the Valeyard incarnation will occur between the 12th and 13th regenerations.
