Drop what you're doing and get to Denny's NOW

You might be lucky enough to listen in on a conversation like I just did.

Man: everyone in our family done got cancer and died.

Woman: not uh, momma smoke her whole life and didn't get cancer b'fore she died.

Man: that's cause she got hit by that train.

Woman: I reckon so.

That I was able to maintain my composure and not spray Grand Slam out my nose, makes me deserving of a medal or something.

"YOU'RE A DETOUR ON THE HIGHWAY TO HEAVEN
(tune: The Great Speckled Bird)

When Momma lay a-dyin' on the flatbed,
She told me not to truck with girls like you,
But I was blinded by the glare of your headlights,
And went joy-ridin' just for the view.

(chorus)
You're a detour on the highway to heaven.
I am lost on the back roads of sin.
I have got to get back to the four-lane,
So that I can see Momma again.

Your curves made me lose my direction,
My hands from the steering wheel strayed,
But you were just one more roadside attraction:
It's been ten thousand miles since I prayed.

If you ever get out of the fast lane,
And get back to that highway above,
I'll be waiting for you at the tollbooth,
In that land where all roads end in love."

lyrics copyright 1993 by Joan Hess, Dorothy Cannell, and Sharyn McCrumb

This was written by award-winning mystery author Sharyn McCrumb, with assistance from fellow mystery writers Joan Hess and Dorothy Cannell. I know Hess included it in her 1994 novel "O Little Town of Maggody" and mystery writer Elizabeth Peters included it in her 1994 "Last Train to Memphis".

David Allen Coe spent 20 of his first 28 years in reform school or jail, IIRC, Johnny Cash and others helped him get parole and keep it together.
Another great one:

That's some old school country, right there.
John Prine has written and performed a lot of great songs. This one comes from his childhood, and speaks so eloquently. Jim & Jesse's version here adds those beautiful mountain harmonies, makes my heart ache every time I hear it

John Prine version, nice slideshow vid

Steve Goodman - a medly from Austin City Limits - a true "musicians musican", gone too soon 1984

He has a song called N-Fucker.

And a couple of underground albums that are full of sexist garbage.
