Abby is nearly blind from cataracts. We cant afford surgery for her, but our vet said she has glaucoma and surgery might not have been an option anyway. Abby is a happy, spunky little go-getter and blindness hasnt slowed her down. When we go to unfamiliar places, Ty is her seeing eye friend and stays with her, guiding her every step.

In front is my senior cat, Natasha Krospina I, Empress Of All The Cats. She's an enormous, cobby Munchkin and is built like a bulldog. Behind her is Hastur The Unspeakable, a Savannah cat who is the most friendly feline I have ever shared a home with. The relationship between them is very similar to what one sees between Margaret DuMont and Harpo in the Marx Brothers comedies.

(14,881 posts)Even the kindest horse can hurt you badly if you get between the horses teeth and the fly that's biting him, lol. I know a 3rd generation horsewoman who was knocked out cold by her dead quiet quarter horse while she was wrapping his legs. Even if you know what you're doing, a momentary lapse of attention can cause a lot of pain.
And they seem to really like standing right where you are. If your feet happen to be there....ouch.
But some of us are bitten by the horse bug very early in life, long before we have a chance to develop fear of pain. It's a lifelong affliction, and not covered by any health care insurance that I'm aware of. So all we can do is live with it and devote all our resources to tamping down the symptoms.
Arcanetrance
(2,670 posts)Meanwhile I'd go explore the streams and woods and stuff
magical thyme
(14,881 posts)summer riders don't have the fullblown version of the disease, which drives you to have them in your backyard so you can spend your winters lugging hot water from the kitchen to the barn and dragging muck-buckets full of manure through 3 feet of snow in 15 below temperatures in exchange for a few rides over the summer, spend every discretionary penny you have on them, and when your elderly one dies and you finally have some time to put into the youngster, you spend the next 18 months scrimping and saving to buy another one to keep the youngster company.
But oh, the fragrance of their warm breath on your face, the gentleness of the caress when they nuzzle the back of your neck, the joy of galloping across a field or just walking down a path through the woods...there's nothing to compare.

(8,175 posts)As soon as I had property where I could keep a horse, I adopted one from the county. I couldn't afford a good horse, but I got a sweet older Arabian mare who was very good on trails. She was my baby until I was disabled and could no longer afford to hay her year-round (not enough pasture here)...so I am sans horse again and really miss her. I have Nigerian goats now and I love them but they just aren't the same, and you can't ride them. I have been riding horses since I was 11 and I don't know how anyone can live without them. They are really the most beautiful creature on earth. Just look at this picture (not mine). How can anyone see this photo and not just fall in love with the beauty that horses are.
[img][/img]
magical thyme
(14,881 posts)but I think is more a great horse! The older horses are soooo smart and kind. I'm sorry you couldn't keep your girl.
I rejected a lot of places due to lack of pasture. I don't have as much as I want, but 2 acres of lush pasture feeds my girl for about 6-7 months out of the year, and we grow decent hay in Maine, so I'm able to get it delivered and stacked right from my own town for less than half what they pay down in southern New England. Otherwise I'd be in trouble...
What I don't have here are accessible trails. I had 3 prospective trailheads -- the snowmobile trail looked like it might come right to my property on the topo map, but instead it comes 2 houses over and they stopped maintaining it some years back, to boot. One starts 2 miles down the road, which I thought would be rideable, but that was watching traffic in April, when people are still hibernating. And the 3rd is logging trails just 1/4 mile down the road, but they are beyond ungroomed and barely walkable by me and the dogs, impassable by a horse. Some day maybe they'll clean them up enough, but until then I'm out of luck.
passiveporcupine
(8,175 posts)I live at the end of a dead end road (low traffic) 1/4 mile from a logging road that leads to endless trails up in the county forest. I got to explore a lot of the mountains up there, and had some really beautiful rides. I used to walk three to five miles a day with my dogs and goats (on shorter trips) when I didn't have a horse. Now my knee won't let me, but if I had the pasture for a horse here to graze most of the year, I'd still be riding up there.
If I could afford the hay, I'd still have a horse. Hay prices have become pretty outrageous here. I'm going to get hay for the goats today (it dropped to 19° the night before last) and it's $11 a bale now at the feed store.
magical thyme
(14,881 posts)but this year I paid the local farmer $5 delivered and stacked. Good-sized bales, too. And the guys that deliver are great -- the farmer's sons and their school friends. I used to count them coming off the truck, but I don't even bother now. They are absolutely honest.
passiveporcupine
(8,175 posts)Good for you. It sounds like you have a great plan. I don't have a place for hay storage (I'm working on a temp shelter now that can hold about 1/2 ton) so I can't get it delivered any more. When I had my mare, I did buy it by the ton and had it delivered...and prices were closer to what you are paying. About $150 a ton, if I recall. Now it's a lot higher. But I always lost a lot of hay to water damage, because I had to store it on pallets under tarps.
The local growers usually charge a couple of bucks less per bale than Ace hardware, and I'm paying over $300 a ton at Ace.
If I can ever get a permanent set up for storing a ton of hay, I will try to find a sweet deal like that again. But it still won't be cheap.
magical thyme
(14,881 posts)All the little outbuildings scattered around were annoying. But I have a shed that holds 150+ bales high, dry and dark. I squeezed another 80 into one stall/turned/tackroom, so I've actually got nearly 2 years worth for her now. I put them on top of a tarp which keeps the bottom layer dry, and another tarp on top to keep the occasional moisture drip from the steel roof off of the top layer. So this year I'll have enough hay inside the barn to get through the heavy snow and ice months.
I have another little shed up by the driveway that holds another 50-60 for years when I can't buy a years worth at once. That one gets mice, but still is better than nothing.

Also a brown tabby. Every time I get up from my desk chair, she will claim it and want belly rubs and chair spins. I say "You got mama's chair" and she is so proud of herself. We do have to fight over who gets the chair.

(5,352 posts)I call that posture "The Akbar"--it's a trap! You think, "Aw, she wants a belly rub" and reach in and watch in horror as she grabs your hand with her front paws, claws out.
She loves the chair, though, and sometimes pesters me until I get up and let her make herself comfortable and maybe nap for awhile...not that she's spoiled or anything.
