Our current house meatloaf was at the back door having a "hissy fit". When I looked out, this is who I saw. Can't get close enough to touch yet. We've put food and water out several times now. He/she is comfortable enough to turn it's back while eating but that's as far as it goes. It seems to be living under our deck as of now.
UPDATE:
Porch Kitty (our unofficial name for him) is still around. He shows up every morning to be fed. He still won't get within reach, but doesn't run off entirely so that's better. He talks to us as we talk to him while we feed and water everyday, (he is usually setting just outside the door waiting for breakfast now) He has finally started using the box/bed we made for him. It's a rather blustery day today and I was very glad/relieved to see him inside. I've been calling it "him" because we've decided since we have seen no obvious signs of pregnancy, it must be a he.

(18,705 posts)I have a backyard cat that was a someone's pet.
She comes in from time to time but likes the yard better.
She is very calm and will be held.
Cats just know where to go.

(9,681 posts)forlorn cats have a underground that tell them to come here, they will be fed and warmed. It definitely makes one feel good to be able to do it for them.

(18,705 posts)My backyard cat was on her own for awhile was a little scared.
I just left her alone, she started to come to me.
I didn't push the kitty.
You have been found.

(56,177 posts)She could be feral, but even if she's not, I bet she's been on her own long enough to have to learn to trust again...sound like you're being patient with her!!!

What a cutie.
How much does he weigh? I have a similar tabby with white chin who weighs 23 pounds.

(2,015 posts)Look at that face!
I do tend to be partial to kitties with slight weight problems but in my house, as long as they don't talk about my weight I don't mention theirs.

Thanks for taking care of PorchKitty!

(50,566 posts)Thank you for helping him (probably a male due to coloring, but not definitely a male).

(50,566 posts)I've read that 80 percent of orange cats are male. But, you know, if that is a male it has a beautiful, more feminine face. You're probably right, though, that if it were a female she'd most likely be pregnant or have kittens.

(56,177 posts)When I found her, I assumed she was a he because of the coloring and kept referring to him as he for a bit until I looked...she'd been dumped and a little nervous, so I didn't push picking up the tail!

(50,566 posts)My mom had an orange female, too.
One of ours is an orangie but he's a boy.

(9,681 posts)him less afraid. He almost came in yesterday. I had some left over roast beef that I gave him, then put some in the doorway and left the door open a crack. He gobbled up the meat, stuck his head in, but thought better of it and went back to his "home". He seems to really like it there, he spends most of his time there, even during the day. We will keep plugging away and maybe one day he will trust us enough.

(13,661 posts)- secondary sexual characteristics - that males in possession of all their equipment usually have.
We're taking care of a feral male around here - poor baby is so skittish - he's all gray with stunning gold eyes. But I digress - he has a HUGE face. Noting is infected, but he's got the big cheeks that males have before they're neutered (if they get old enough to develop them).
Your guy could be young.
Or female.
We have two orange female tabbies.
Females, especially in colder weather, often don't go into heat from Dec. - Feb. or so ... so just because there's no pregger tummy, doesn't mean that kitty isn't female.
Edited: by the way, thank you so much for taking care of this cat!
Also, my mother has always called our cats meatloafs. Has always made me laugh!
