Tino Rossi, great crooner of the 1930s

Born in the town of Ajaccio, Corsica (birthplace of Napoleon) Rossi rose to great stardom in France and throughout Europe. Blessed with an operatic voice and intense Rudolph Valentino-like good looks in his youth, Rossi starred in 25 films and recorded hundreds of tunes. His records have sold more than 300 million copies worldwide. So soothing was his voice that it was said his records were played in asylums for the criminally insane for their calming effects on the inmates.

While I've never been a big fan of his biggest commercial hits, mostly in French, I find his many recordings of folksongs from his native island of Corsica sung in the Corsican language to be extremely beautiful.
