John Zorn's insane arrangement of Morricone's "The Big Gundown":
Rhys Chatham blends minimalism with rock:
A middle-aged jazz keyboardist and experimental bassist/producer somehow ended up recording one of the most iconic pop hits of the mid-80s, and brought hip-hop culture to suburbia.

(19,375 posts)was instrumental in ushering in a new appreciation for contemporary Blues. SRV had had a pretty good career as a sideman up to that point in a few different genres, but Texas Flood was his first solo effort, and established him as a Blues titan.
Can only dream of what he would have continued to put out if he had not been taken so early. RIP Stevie.

(4,138 posts)He was a champion of traditionalist blues at a time when it was pretty uncool to most people, and when a lot of the 60s-70s bands that cut their teeth on the blues were desperately trying to reinvent themselves away from that sound. And was so incredibly talented that he made the blues cool again.

From Britain you had the Smiths, New Order, Jesus and Mary Chain, Echo and the Bunnymen, House of Love, Sisters of Mercy, and the list just goes on...

My brother, who wasn't even born until 1980, loves Husker Du.
