CHEF BOYARDEE (& conagra foods) basically says SCREW YOU

or screw me.
(and, probably, you too)

i've been buying cans of chef boyardee ravioli etc. for adults in our household to take to work for lunches. we also pack a microwave container that gets brought home, washed and reused. the cans can also be rinsed out & recycled.

the last couple of months i have found it harder & harder to find the pop top lids to the cans (which allows us to open the cans without carrying a can opener)

it seems all the stores have eliminated the pop tops on the 15 oz. cans. chef B. has replaced this with an item that is TWICE THE PRICE, FOR HALF THE AMOUNT OF FOOD (7.5 oz) in a throw away (nonrecyclable) microwavable bowl. so if i want to buy 15 oz. instead of paying $1.00 i would now have to pay $4.00!!!

so i called. talked to "carmen" & asked if the pop tops were being discontinued. the answer is yes. then she rattled off (very quickly) some shit about how having to continue the pop tops would have forced them to raise their prices. she also told me about the convenient alternative of the microwave bowls. i informed her they are twice the price and half the food content. she got very huffy and quickly said she would pass my concern on. (probably to the garbage can)

assholes!

i doubt keeping the pop top would have made conagra increase their prices. but it sounds like a good bullshit excuse so you end up spending 4X the money you otherwise would have on something with the same quaintity and convenience.

boo conagra & chef boyardee

Sure, it tastes great and I love it. But it's not very healthy. I know it's a pain to prepare your own food but try it. It sounds like you were already going to some trouble with the microwave dishes and recycling. It's not all that tough to get a good rice cooker with a basket in the top and steam rice, chicken/beef/pork and veggies the night before and put them in the microwave container to warm up at lunch. I bet you'd see yourselves losing weight.

Or buy the packages of pre-cut lettuce, some cherry tomatoes, cucumbers and they have pre-cooked sliced chicken and shredded cheese like you'd get on a restaurant salad in regular and southwestern flavors. Putting that together in a Tupperware dish is not much more difficult than opening the pop top of ravioli. You can put that together the night before and store in the fridge. Just add a little dressing at lunch and you're good to go.

mostly it is a 25 year old and a 28 year old who take this to work. they can't be bothered preparing their lunch ahead of time. they want to grab something and go. they have switched to $1 banquet microwave dinners & $1 weird noodles with high sodium content.

(and i'm not going to be preparing lunches for kids over 25!)

If you ever looked at the SODIUM Levels its horrifying. There are a few LOW SODIUM tuna fish in the can...

... you could always open the can, put the contents in a jar, and take it with you. I can't stand the stuff - too mushy and sweet for me, but the microwave packaging is definitely not worth the extra cost.
