A DU good Samaritan PM’d by about a spelling error I’d made. That is why I like Spanish spelling

so much better than English spelling.

With English, you have all these dumbass silent letters that even a genius like me can get mixed up. Much of the time, how a word is spelled has NOTHING to do with how it is pronounced.

Enough to give you pneumonic plague….

My DIL was taking an online English course and called one night. She asked how to pronounce or spell some word that she didn't understand. When I told her, she said something about 'why does it have so many letters?' and 'English is stupid!'.

I agreed with her and apologized for the English. I explained that it wasn't technically America's fault. Which left the door open for one of her most adorable comments. "Oh! That's right! I don't speak English, I speak American!"

To be fair, some of those Japanese letters/symbols are ridiculously similar. No wonder so many people have 'Soup' tattooed on their bodies.

But it's still not entirely friendly to speakers outside the Romantic or Germanic languages.

= fish (using unusual pronunciations of letters in certain English words).

The "gh" is like the "f" sound of "enough".

The "o" is like the "i" sound in"women".

The "ti" like the "sh" sound in "nation".
