The DU Lounge
Related: Culture Forums, Support ForumsThe movie suggestion thread
I know these have probably been done a 1,000 times. My new shows don't start for awhile and I need somethings to watch. So I am entrusting you, the people of DU to give me suggestions.
Ground rules (well sort of suggestions):
1) No scary movies (I used to watch that stuff when I was a teenager, but these days it scares the crap out of me)
2) I love action, comedy, and romance
3) Nothing depressing (The Hours comes to mind, I almost slit my throat after watching that crap)
4) Nothing gushingly romantic
5) I prefer movies from the 80's forward, willing to accept some 70's stuff.
6) The movie must be on DVD already
A brief list of movies I hated: The Hours, Casino, Fargo, and Identify Theft
Movies I won't watch: Harry Potter series, and The Twilight series
So suggest away.......

(2,817 posts)I like Quirky/funny movies and gave a list of not so obvious movies titles.
Inside Moves: "After a failed suicide attempt leaves him partially crippled, Rory begins spending a lot of time at a neighborhood bar full of interesting misfits."
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0080928/?ref_=sr_1
American Strays: "The desert can be a lonely place for the people who live there or for those who are traveling through. It is also the teller of different stories including the story of a traveling salesman whose only commodity is death and the story of a young man who finds that the death that he wishes for is difficult to find. Others are just traveling through, on their way to another place when they stop to eat at Red's Desert Oasis. The food may not be great, and the waitress may be surly, but those who stopped at Red's will find that they are involved in the showdown of their life."

U Turn: "A young punk drifter heading to Vegas to pay off his gambling debt before the Russian mafia kills him, is forced to stop in a Arizona town where everything that can go wrong, does go wrong for him."
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0120399/?ref_=sr_1
29th Street: "Frank Pesce is the luckiest man alive in spite of his bad luck. Based on a true story, a man growing up in a tough New York neighborhood has a gift for finding himself in the worst possible jams...and always getting out. He is the first New York Lottery winner."

2 Days in the Valley: "48 hours of intersecting lives and crimes in Los Angeles."

(13,424 posts)It's a comedy about a woman who witnesses her husband's murder and then flees to Los Angeles where she falls for a television actor whom she believes is actually the character he plays and not a real person on his own.
The murder has a brief graphic scene but the movie as a whole is funny and sweet. You may not like it since you did not like Fargo, but it is a fun movie with an A list cast.
Incitatus
(5,317 posts)If you're into comedy that's a little twisted: Pawn Shop Chronicles

(8,217 posts)Cashback - I mentioned this before. It is about a guy who develops insomnia after breaking up with his girlfriend. I love it because it is so artistic and imaginative. There is nudity but it is tastefully done. Nudity here is like nudity in paintings.
When someone mentions the beauty of dust floating in light, I am so sold.
District 13(Banlieue 13) - French Parkour movie by Luc Besson. It has one of the guys who popularized Parkour. It was pretty good when it came out.
Hugo - It was really pretty during the time it came out in theaters. It has Asa Butterfield who is the lead in Ender's Game, as well as Chloe Grace Moretz. I enjoyed the illustrations and period of this piece.
Lock Stock and 2 Smoking Barrels - A Guy Ritchie Film. I enjoy his films.
Musa - This one is a Korean film that has action. It is a period piece about a slave who ends up helping a band of Koreans to escape some Mongols. It has Ziyi Zhang. There are no high flying acrobatics, which is something I can appreciate, even if there are fight scenes.
Neverland - 2011 with Rhys Ifans. It is a retelling of Peter Pan, but I think it was well done. It is a 2 episode series.
Taverner
(55,476 posts)Bertha Venation
(21,484 posts)Shirley Valentine (love of life recaptured)
Tootsie (hilarious)
Amadeus (amazing performances by Tom Hulce and F. Murray Abraham)
The Long Kiss Goodnight (action/violent)
Roxanne (hilarious)
Enjoy your movies!

One of my faves of all time: Joe vs the Volcano. Kind of quirky, but I love that kind of stuff.
