Really big ears. I thought they were difficult to "tame." It's a lovely story.

I think I saw it on Smithsonian, but it could have been something else, about an elephant sanctuary in Africa. I got in on it after it started, so I'm not really sure exactly where it was in Africa. They had about
8 elephants of different ages and they were trying to acclimate a new youngster to the group. each one had a trainer and they kept them active. They were mostly in a large enclosed area, but would take them out in the brush on the reserve. One of the outings was to play games/exercises to keep up their skills and dexterity. The had them all facing front in a line and they passed a stick along the line with their trunks.

On one outing the rode them down to a watering hole where they splashed and played and layed down in the water. I half expected to see that dog.

In another exercise, "who's hat?" they would pick up a hat with their trunk and then return it to the trainer it belonged to. Elephants sense of smell is 10x (or some large figure) that of a bloodhound .

I wish I knew what channel it was so I could give a link.
