Do smokers have any idea that they smell like aged turds? (Original Post) onehandle Sep 2013 OP

Totally don't post this in GD!

The torrent of screaming, hysterical abuse that will be unleashed upon you may require years of counseling, and several voluntary charitable organizations to help you get over.

Shit. I'm a medical provider, and when I mention the dangers of smoking, the nicotine fiends conjure up demons from The Pit to curse my family and succeeding generations.

Never underestimate the berserk rage of devotees of the most addictive substance known to man...

I had no idea how badly I reeked.

Now, 17 years after quitting, I can smell a smoker at 50 paces

When I quit smoking years ago the first thing I noticed was how bad everything and almost everyone, including the non-smokers, smelled.

I quit but I still enjoy the smell of smoke from a distance, especially from a pipe or a bonfire or a barbecue. None of them good for me to inhale, I'm sure, but at age 67, I don't give a shit. I REALLY don't want to live to 100.

Unlike cigarette and cigar smoke, they don't contain the hundreds of noxious chemicals the tobacco companies add to their product to make it more addictive.

Plus, bonfires and barbecues are outdoors (at least, they should be.) And even though indoor smoking is prohibited in most places these days, it's hard to argue against the observation that when smokers come indoors afterward, they bring the bad-smelling stuff in with them, as related in the OP.

As much as I despise smoking, I admit I like the occasional smell of a good, aromatic pipe tobacco. I just don't want to be cooped up next to someone while he's smoking, or just after...

did a study that found pipe smokers lived a little longer than non smokers. Pipe smokers generally don't inhale, and tend to be very relaxed people to start with (stress is a big killer).

get into bonfire/campfire and even good pipe tobacco smells from a distance too.

I like the smell of wood smoke on my clothing and in my hair.

Cigarette tobacco, though...I dunno. Seems like there's something different about that smell. Just nasty.

So should non-smokers.

And especially former smokers. I'm one of those. We're a pain in the ass.

Or it was just me. I never noticed when I smoke--I don't think I noticed other smokers' smell until I stopped smoking.

To avoid smelling like that is one thing keeping me from not smoking.

I haven't smoked in years and years but I still can get a thrill from smelling a great cigar. Cigarettes don't do it for me except for strong French cigarettes like Gitanes, Gauloises, Celtiques, or Boyards. If they ever found a way to make smoking tobacco safe, I'd be smoking tomorrow. I really enjoyed it, including the smell.

I smoked for years and did not notice it.

Now I can totally smell the sweet, delicious scent of tobacco smoke from miles away. Gosh I miss smoking.

But smokers do smell.
