So my company recently transferred me to another office in the state (after just moving into this state in early July). They transferred me over Labor Day weekend.

I negotiated with them to put me up for September, which they did, but I'm on limited time now. My contract with them ends on 1/31 and I plan on moving back home after that (unless it's extended or I'm offered another campaign elsewhere).

Would you sign a short-term apartment lease (which I did in the other city and the guy they switched with me took it over unofficially) or would you stay in an extended stay hotel?

Apartment advantages-- choice in where I stay, privacy, amenities, possibly cheaper/possibly not

Hotel advantages-- No lease paperwork/fees, no utilities, no cable/internet, would not have to move the (very) small amount of furniture I acquired in the other city. Could be more expensive and I don't know what kind of clientele the other guests are.

I was quoted on a 1BR for $869 in this city (more expensive because it's a short-term lease) before utilities (trash, water/sewer, electric, cable/internet)
Extended Stay America quoted me $969/month.

1. Sounds like a no-brainer to me...

If your contract ends at the end of January and you aren't sure you'll be staying, I'd go with the extended stay place. You don't have the hassle with all the utilities and such and there's no lease. You can always change your mind if they renew your contract.
On the downside, you don't always have the best choice for neighbors. But those places usually have roving security on the premises.

I spent the last 8 years living in hotels... I vote for the extended stay... I survived

3. i love hotel living!

Spent 13 years traveling with the air force. We would stay at hotels for months.

Come back to your room, everything is clean. Bring you fresh towels and coffee every day. "Free" breakfast. Leaves you free to concentrate on work.

utilities will run you more than a hundred bucks a month. extended stay america is livable.

6. Also take a look at Marriott Apartments

I was able to rent one of these, for two different short term (4 month) assignments it's fully furnished and you get a lot more room than an extended stay hotel.

I'm not sure what the price was though, I was lucky enough that the company picked up the tab.

On edit: I also got Marriott reward points that gave me enough to take the family to Hershey Park for 4 nights.
