The equinox happens at 4:44 pm Eastern time on Sunday Sept. 22.
Good or bad?
Personally, I enjoy many things about Autumn, but am not thrilled with winter. More than anything, I hate the short, gloomy days.

I do love the colors and the ability to cook stews, roast chickens and other things that heat the kitchen up too much in the summer.

(60,018 posts)Actually, I enjoy autumn (the season) - some of it is nostalgia (it was a great time to be a New Englander, with all of the colors). It means a break from a long garden season...and it means a two week trip to the NC Outer Banks!
I can tell by the number of huge web spinning brownish orange spiders that seem to be everywhere in my yard, on my windows (and I've only walked directly through a few of their webs thus far)

(30,947 posts)I grew up in Miami, FL, and moved to the Atlanta area in 1989. I won a ski trip for two to Colorado from a local radio station. I took my daughter who still lives in Miami. She was ecstatic because she had never seen snow. And there was a lot of it. I loved Colorado. The Rockies are fabulous. The Smoky Mountains are not that far from me in Tennessee and I have been there many times, but the Rockies are far more spectacular.

(131,063 posts)and now that I have my cottage, I'm interested to see how things look at the river, so would like summer and autumn to last longer this year.

(41,990 posts)Autumn here in Seattle is pretty enough, not like New England but some pleasant color and some great wind storms. It starts to cloud over about now so we won't see a whole lot of sun until about June...which is the problem. That and the eight hour days in the dead of winter. Mr. Bear has always maintained that I have SAD and I've begun to agree with him.
But autumn? Yeah, bring it on!

Seattle winters must be pretty dark, you're a bit further north than we are - Detroit is about 42 degrees north, you 're almost at the 48th.

(41,990 posts)Can't get much different from New Orleans than Seattle. This is a nice place but I always, always want to be in nola. I'm there as often as I can manage it.

(30,947 posts)I love winter. I love cold weather. We here in North Georgia do not have the brutally cold winters as in the north. In fact, we may only get snow once or twice during winter. Our winters are fairly pleasant and the temperatures occasionally dip below freezing but warm up quickly. The only thing I hate is when there are ice storms. People here do not know how to drive on ice. I don't either as I have had a few mishaps driving and walking on it. I grew up in South Florida and moved here in 1989 and still cannot deal with ice.

I met my wife and proposed last Autumn.
Fall tour is the best mix of outdoor and arena shows (Grateful Dead/Phish).
The COLORS!
Of course it's a precurser to a nasty four-letter word which I won't mention, however seasons come and seasons go...
Happy Autumnal Equinox, everyone!
