Original Star Trek had lyrics?

http://now.msn.com/star-trek-lyrics-written-by-gene-roddenberry-make-us-glad-they-were-not-included-on-the-show

I did not know this:

Beyond
The rim of the star-light
My love
Is wand'ring in star-flight
I know
He'll find in star-clustered reaches
Love,
Strange love a star woman teaches.
I know
His journey ends never
His star trek
Will go on forever.
But tell him
While he wanders his starry sea
Remember, remember me

It's been known for more than a few years already, and I only found out about it now.

I am a failure as a Trek fan.

So I guess I can't ask you what episode and who sang it. I know, but won't spoil your quest by telling you.

He wrote some crappy lyrics just he could get co-writer credit, and thus have half the royalties that went with it. He really screwed Alexander Courage.

Roddenberry wanted a piece of the composing profits, so he wrote the hokey lyrics solely to receive a "co-writer" credit.

As one of the composers, Roddenberry received 50% of the royalties... cutting Alexander Courage's share in half. Not surprisingly, Courage was furious about the deal. Though it was legal, he admitted, it was unethical because Roddenberry had contributed nothing to why the music was successful.

He got his son to write the lyrics for "Suicide is Painless" as part of his deal, just so he could earn a quick buck.

He had no idea that they would do a TV show and use the theme.

He said in an interview once that it "wasn't fair. My kid made more money off of MASH than I did for directing the movie!"

He did not make a lot of money during the original series run, the show was not highly rated and at the time audience demographics were not used as they are today. Even Shatner thought they would be cancelled after only 2 seasons. I think it was only after the show went to syndication and it turned into a cult series that Gene began to see any kind of money out of it.

A lot of TV show themes had lyrics written that were never sung. In some cases, this was because the producers opted to use an instrumental. In others, it was a royalties grab, which is what happened with Star Trek.

When the copyright was filed for Star Trek's theme, it was "Music by Alexander Courage, Lyrics by Gene Roddenberry." Roddenberry wrote lyrics to the song knowing they'd never be used so he could share in the royalties and residuals from the theme. Courage never forgave him, which is why he never wrote the music for the movies.

Some of my favorites that you never knew had lyrics:

"I Dream of Jeannie," music by Hugo Montenegro, lyrics by Buddy Kaye:

"Bewitched," music by Jack Keller, Lyics by Howard Greenfeld.

"Keep Your Fingers Crossed (Theme from the Dick Van Dyke Show)" music by Earle Hagel, Lyrics by Morey Amsterdam.

"Fishin' Hole (Theme from the Andy Griffith Show)" music by Earle Hagen and Herbert Spencer, lyrics by Everett Sloane.

And, of course, music and lyrics by Dezi Arnaz:

it was the one with the boy who had powers to survive alone and wanted to be the one loved by all. It might be cut out of some episodes on repeat. I distinctly remember being surprised at the words.

PS. I have the 45 of Desi singing I love Lucy and on the other side is Babalou

just read in snopes how many people mistake beyond antares for the theme song sung in that episode. Add me to that list.

I think I read this in the first Trek book ever written, by Steven Whitfield and Roddenberry.
