She died this morning. I thought she would hang on, and it was just colic. I hung onto her for far longer than I should have.
She's in a better place now.

(23,272 posts)There's never a "right" time. You can only go by your instinct.
So sorry for your loss.

(39,961 posts)I gave her the food she liked best, held her, and I hope she passed on knowing I loved her.

(1,113 posts)I understand that about holding on to your friend longer than you should have. We have memories and now she resides in your heart. RIP Contessa.

There aren't enough words to sooth the pain when our friends cross the rainbow bridge.

(39,961 posts)she was bad off . I hated like hell to do it, and put it off more than I should have done.

(39,961 posts)It's a shame, but she is better off. I'm probably an asshole for making her linger in suffering.

(39,961 posts)She was screaming in pain. It's my own damn fault for not doing it sooner.

(18,481 posts)...so we can apply what we've learned. IMHO the average pet is more loving than the average person. No wonder it's hard to let go.

(1,328 posts)We have been guilty of hanging on too long also. You love them so much that you do not want to say goodbye.
Aerows
(39,961 posts)She was such a beautiful cat, even in the end she was gorgeous, had a great personality and was lively.
I guess I did it when she and I both were ready.

(13,661 posts)My husband and I kept our beloved boy Tommycat too long, too. Liver failure; we gave him fluids and spoon fed him too long; at one point he looked me in the eye, meowed "please stop" and so we did. It was a Sunday, he was gone that night. And I damn well know he was in pain the last few weeks. And I hate myself for it.
He was my husband's cat before we married and husband didn't want to have Tommy's last experience a half hour ride to the vet ... but I should have insisted. I love(d) that cat with all my heart.
I understand. Next time, do it earlier. That's all you can do. We have five more cats, and even if I have to hog-tie my husband, I'm going to take each one in for a peaceful sleep rather than let them linger.
Aerows
(39,961 posts)I loved her, thought she would die about a month ago, and a vet told me it was colic. Which is stupid. She was 18 years old, but I guess he convinced me of what I wanted to be convinced of.

It will get better.
