1. Craigslist. You can ask the person selling it to demonstrate it's functionality.

Ebay can be a crapshoot with electronics.

2. Check the want ads

I think the Gamestop still wants about 140 for a used Xbox which to me is way to much for a used console. I know you can check out pawn shops as well. A buddy of mine got a 80 gig ps3 used for 110 at a pawn shop, Gamestop still wants about 170 for used ps3.

3. To avoid the RROD

I would advise getting either a fat 360 from summer/fall 2007 with either a Zephyr or Falcon motherboard and the HDMI port. Jasper models from 2008 are tricky because later produced models returned to the previous bad GPU design.

Ideally get a thin 360 from 2010 onwards - the Valhalla or Corona models also with HDMI.

Avoid like the plague the original fat 360 Xenons from 2005 to 2007. They are the worst for RROD failures.

If you can wait until the Xbox One is released, there will be a 'new' 360 released that will likely be rather reasonably priced new.

Never set your 360 on carpet, always keep it well-ventilated, and I personally use an external fan system to expel hot air from my entertainment unit for extra protection.
