Rough rough day at work probably my toughest ever

sorry I just need to vent and my wife is sad enough already.

First I was told yesterday that I had to sign a new employment contract/confidentiality agreement by 9 am or I would be fired. No they aren't supposed to do that but they did....that is why I am trying to get out of this job. Two lawyers looked at the agreement and both said it was a ridiculous document - they can make me come back to work for them? no damages needed for a lawsuit? etc. Yes they are suing a former employee (that they fired) so I didn't want to sign it. I did. I could have stood on principle but they finally (on the 3rd request) gave me the contract I signed 4 years ago and it was virtually the same - hey I needed the job.

So I signed it. It is easier to get a job WITH a job than without or so they say.

45 minutes later I get a email on my iPhone from a recruiter I am working with. I interviewed 3 times for a really great job - he and I thought I was a lock - and didn't get the job. I called him and he explained that they decided to not hire anyone. There was another candidate but they didn't get the job either. The last interview was 2 hours and it included going to lunch which usually means you have the job. My recruiter was flat out shocked, everything had been so positive. The Director wanted to hire me after the first interview but needed to cover their tracks by interviewing other people and that break in time lead to not pulling the trigger so to speak.

All day I sat at work feeling like the a-holes who (mis)run my the company had won AND I couldn't tell anyone how $#itty of a day I was having.

Look I know there are people with a lot worse problems but this was like a double kick in the stomach.

....and then I picked up my little girl at daycare, came home and practiced soccer, and I don't feel so bad.

Tough day. If you made it to this point thanks for listening to my vent.

We can talk all we like about standing up to the Man, and take this job and shove it, and all that.

But we need those jobs. Our families need us to have them.

Those dirty, scummy people who forced you to do this, and the company who left you hanging. God damn them all.

Some times I really understand the folks who snap.

Those same things have happened to me over the years. I quit a job when they came to me after about a month on the job and said, "We forgot to have you sign this contract and hand it in to HR." As it turns out the "contract" said if I quit the job within a two year span I would have to reimburse the company for any training I received. I told them to shove it and left.

Two different times I interviewed for the same position for a company and both times they told me I was the one to beat. As it turns out the first time I lost out it was to one of the bosses kids who was fresh out of school and needed a job. The job was an unsupervised position that required traveling around a huge marketing area to provide training for their product. After about the 10th phone call telling the boss that his kid didn't show up, the kid was fired. They call me back in to interview for the position again and I'll be damned if they didn't hire the bosses secretaries kid.

Boss's kids are VP and a Director (of a Department we don't need).
Boss's husband gets paid what I do to clean the toilets and vacuum (but not dust).

I won't be shocked if the dogs are on the payroll.

You have a wife that you love (showed concern by not venting to her) a daughter that you can play soccer with,
and, however f'ed up, a job. Some days I think I'm predisposed to feel shitty. Other days, nothing can get me down.
Kick back and enjoy whats left of the day.

but glad it got a little better after you played soccer with your little girl.

For what it's worth, the job you wanted that they ended up not hiring anyone? It may have been a budget thing, and if the company does well then it may be re-budgeted next year, and they might come looking for you. I've been on the other side of that, sort of (as an overworked team member who thought they were getting help, then didn't), and the hiring manager wasn't happy to have the rug pulled like that, either. The guy you were talking to was probably honest with you and didn't expect or like what happened.

Anyway I hope it gets better from here.

Being in a job you can't stand is horrible. It affects your whole life. And then losing out on a chance to get out just makes it worse.

I can certainly sympathize with working for assholes. I moved to NC just before they elected a bunch of assholes. Morale among state employees is extremely low.

I had a similar situation a few years back regarding a job, too, so I can sympathize.

I remember back in my old life as a high-tech contractor, at some point they changed agencies without telling us. We had packages with new contracts fedexed to us right before Christmas. Sign and return by December 31, or something to that effect.

Stupid way to do business. I spent Christmas marking up my contract. But things softened up pretty quickly because not only was everybody bullshit about it, a lot of them were in stronger positions and just didn't race to do anything. So the brief attempt at overlord control fell apart in a heap.
