(6,154 posts)What's your favourite place so far? Least fav? How has your experience of Asia been for the countries you have been to, I only single out Asia I like it so.
DFW
(54,445 posts)Least fav is probably Romania, but I have only been there to meet with the government in the capital city, and it is still a dirty, grungy, socialist-era drab town with smelly cars and buses, and very few signs of modernization. I have heard many nice things about parts of the countryside, but I have never had occasion to be there.
Places I love--LOTS of them!! Norway, Denmark, Switzerland, Prague, Catalonia (the part of Spain where I lived) certainly lead the pack. I even like my little corner of the German Rheinland (or I wouldn't live here). I also love New England and the Pacific Northwest in the USA. Maybe not PC for a southern boy to say that, but that's just the way it is.
Asia is cool to visit, but I never really felt at home there. I want to see the Maldives before they sink under the water, and the architecture in Burma seems incredible, maybe even beats Thailand--I want to check it out someday, anyway.
Oh, and maybe familiarity DOES breed contempt--I forgot three countries that I visit almost every week!!

(6,154 posts)Which of the Lived in Countries were you born in? I ask cause I really want to visit India.
Living in India was interesting to say the least.
I was there in 1967-68, a sophomore at the American International School, -now the American Embassy School- in New Delhi. So India was two worlds for me, the school life and the India experience.
The school was pretty much an American experience, AIS/AES is an American school with Indian culture mixed in. House-keeping and maintenance were Indians as were a number of instructors. The student body, while predominately American, was made up of kids from all around the world.
New Delhi, India was a different world. Remember, this was 46 years ago so I can't comment on how things are now, but suspect while much has changed, many things remain the same.
Cows every where. Life much more basic for a segment of the population, many living in huts or tents along the roads, cooking over open fires fueled by dried cow patties, which gave New Delhi it's distinctive fragrance.
There were street vendors, small shops of every type. Beautiful rugs, brassware, artwork, fabric and the like. Food vendors everywhere, although I didn't partake because 'DelhiBelly' was common for us foreigners so we were careful about where we ate.
The infrastructure was chaotic at best, power lines everywhere. Construction was very much labor intensive, women with a basket of rocks balance on their heads, barefoot men using basic tools.
In the suburbs (Kailash colony) where we lived was predominately homes, mostly multi-story square houses with flat accessible roofs and walled in yards. Across the street from us was a tented food vendor. One day I was on the roof taking in the sights when I noticed them using a giant wok like pan to cook with, they filled it partway with sand a set it over the fire. This had my curiosity peaked so I watched, eventually they put something in the hot sand. . .popcorn, and it sold well. No I didn't get any but one could only imagine how gritty it must have been. There are or course the high dollar/rupee areas with great beautiful homes and properties.
We had our car shipped from the states, but my usual transportation, besides the school bus was either taxi or rickshaw
Taxi rides were a trip, the prevailing technique was for the driver to lightly place his thumb on the horn ring so the bumps in the road would cause the horn to sound intermittently, be,be,beep,be,be,beep, beep which was important at night in that they tended to "save" the lights by driving with them off except where absolutely necessary.
We employed a family as staff; cook, maid, bearer, gardener who lived in a two room apt. off of our house. They were nice people who took care of us well. Fortunately the cook was savvy to our Western digestive tracks and kept the Delhibelly to a minimum, he was a good cook as well. He cooked us both American food and Indian food, I found I really enjoyed Indian food, wonderful spices and techniques.
Having said all that, there are many beautiful and unique places and things to see in India, well worth a visit.
I hope I haven't rattled on to much, your question has opened many memories of one of the most interesting years of my life. Bear in mind this is the view of a 16-17 year old plucked from his North American life and set in New Delhi, India for a year or so.
You know I'm going to be thinking about this for the rest of the night, looking at my yearbook and remembering things here and there.

(2,760 posts)How much time in a country is necessary to determine living versus travel? I currently live in Thailand and have been in Asia now for a number of years. All total I have either traveled or lived in over 100 foreign countries. I was a Peace Corps Volunteer twice in West Africa and then went back on my own as a volunteer in Ethiopia and spent close to two years in East, Central and South Africa. I left for an extended period the first time in 1966 and have had so many wonderful cultural adventures that I have a friend who spent twenty years convincing me I had to write up some of my stories. The first book "Safari na Paka" was published in 2004 followed by a second in 2008. I am currently putting together the stories for my third book "Planet Earth Vagabond." Travel is addicting, but also a lot of fun.
