Rare hermaphrodite puppy discovered

JACKSONVILLE, FL (WTLV/CNN) - This puppy is recovering from surgery that came as a complete surprise to its owner.

She bought the pup thinking it was a girl - but it was actually a hermaphrodite.

Dr. Kelly Farrell says it's a very rare condition. "Usually it is from inbreeding. It's an auto receptive, which means each parent has to have the gene for it," she said.

The dog had a testicle where an ovary is normally located.

Doctors performed corrective surgery.

Looks like the puppy had to be spayed and neutered.

It would be literal inbreeding if you took sperm from her testicle and gave her artificial insemination with it! I suppose if she did get pregnant the puppies would likely have health problems.

I have heard weird anomalies like this are fairly common in domestic rabbits.

But I've never heard any sayings regarding being born with both sets of junk.

the owners of the dog should be on the lookout for hip dysplasia which is another genetic condition that results from inbreeding.
