I want to get off the Coke permanently - help me with my addiction.

Yup, longtime serious Coke problem. And Pepsi. Worst of all, Mountain Dew. I have done regular, I have done diet. When I got serious about health, I gave it up entirely for about 3-4 months, then I slipped - one morning, early, in the winter, I had to drive on bad roads and was very tired, and I succumbed to a McDonald's drive through Diet Coke. Which soon became a daily habit.

Help me break this. I should really just drink water and possibly iced tea, no sugar - that would be my goal.

And since diet sodas contain potentially carcinogenic ingredients, I'd suggest going the real-sugar (or corn syrup, whatever) route when you do indulge.

It only took severe stomach pain to make me stop. I have GERD and other stomach issues and Diet Coke aggravated it. I switched to coffee - which didn't help at all. I had to quit both. Oh God, it was hard. I drink mostly water and Perrier (always good when you crave carbonation). Sometimes iced tea w/splenda, or even powdered mixed drinks or squirt mixes - not healthy but I'm trying to kick this habit, I'll wean off the powdered drinks/liquid mixes later...LOL. I don't drink them often anyhow because they just don't taste that great. Like I said, mostly water and Perrier. In winter I'll drink more hot herbal teas, I did last winter. I've been off of Diet Coke for 7 months or so now. I still have the occasional one, at my parent's house or eating out, but I don't keep them in the house, and I rarely go out to eat so usually it's just at my parent's house - so one every 2-4 weeks or so.

I had a friend who had quit drugs, quit smoking and gave up sugar completely, but couldn't kick the Diet Coke habit. They must put something in it, seriously.

I get wanting some caffeine to stay awake. On days I NEED to stay awake I'll have a bit of coffee or black tea, but I almost always end up with stomach pain later. *sigh* Mostly I try to get enough sleep and keep moving, and take vitamins, lots of vitamins. I had a vit D deficiency discovered in a blood test last summer and if I don't take my supplements I do feel sleepier.

Good luck, I know how hard it is!! But you did it once, I'm sure you can do it again!

Instant orange sorta-soda, minus the aspartame. It was the fizz that I missed the most and the Mio/seltzer takes care of it. Also I got a Brita pitcher and started making myself drink more water, at least half a glass before making the orange drink- that cut down the fizzy-stuff intake a lot.

Don't worry about the slips. They happen. Once in a while I still like a Mexican Coke, but it's something like every 6 weeks or so.

Been there, years ago.
I DO know they admit to putting a LOT of sodium in Coke, and probably Pepsi, to make you thirsty and wanting more, sooner.
I got off by getting a 6 pack of diet coke..this was years ago...which I hated. It pretty much ruined my taste for soft drinks, and now when I steal a dip of a friend's cola, it tastes overly sweet to me.
What I did was always have a glass of ice water near me, and taking a sip or two when I had a coke craving.
Worked for me, as did the fact the store was too far away at the time to give in to sudden mad cravings.

What helps me now is knowing that carbonated drinks do a bad number on bones.

I buy frozen or fresh orange juice and other fruit &/or vegetable juices with vitamin C, and no high fructose corn syrup and have a glass a day. I want what I'm consuming to have some nutritional value if it has calories.

Since you mentioned Diet Coke, which is sweetened with Aspartame, you should read this-
http://www.mayoclinic.com/health/phenylalanine/AN01552

A 12 ounce can of Coke has 140 Calories / 39 grams of sugar; a 20 ounce bottle has 260 calories / 65 grams of sugar.
1 teaspoon of sugar weighs 9 grams so you get 8.57 teaspoons of sugar in one 12 oz.can, 15.47 teaspoons of sugar in a 20 oz. bottle.

Do you drink coffee or tea in the morning, or to 'wake up' on the road?
I doubt that you'd ever put anywhere near that amount of sugar in iced tea or coffee!

make lots of fresh ice tea (white tea is good or fresh mint)

Think... do you really want to put this stuff in your body??

Diet Coke:

CARBONATED WATER, CARAMEL COLOR, ASPARTAME, PHOSPHORIC ACID, POTASSIUM BENZOATE (TO PROTECT TASTE), NATURAL FLAVORS, CITRIC ACID, CAFFEINE.

Coke:
CARBONATED WATER, HIGH FRUCTOSE CORN SYRUP, CARAMEL COLOR, PHOSPHORIC ACID, NATURAL FLAVORS, CAFFEINE.

and do you really want to support a mega corporation that makes money from selling non-nutritive over priced drinks???

What Coke Contains:
https://medium.com/the-ingredients-2/221d449929ef

Each can originated in a small town of 4,000 people on the Murray River in Western Australia called Pinjarra. Pinjarra is the site of the world’s largest bauxite mine. Bauxite is surface mined — basically scraped and dug from the top of the ground. The bauxite is crushed and washed with hot sodium hydroxide, which separates it into aluminum hydroxide and waste material called red mud. The aluminum hydroxide is cooled, then heated to over a thousand degrees celsius in a kiln, where it becomes aluminum oxide, or alumina...transported to Downey, California, where it is rolled flat in a rolling mill, and turned into aluminum sheets. The sheets are punched into circles and shaped into a cup...

Coca-Cola is made from a syrup produced by the Coca-Cola Company of Atlanta. The main ingredient in the formula used in the United States is a sweetener called high-fructose corn syrup 55... made by grinding wet corn until it becomes cornstarch. The cornstarch is mixed with an enzyme secreted by a rod-shaped bacterium called Bacillus and an enzyme secreted by a mold called Aspergillus. This process creates the glucose. A third enzyme, also derived from bacteria, is then used to turn some of the glucose into fructose...The second ingredient, caramel coloring, gives the drink its distinctive dark brown color...is made by heating sugars with sulfite and ammonia to create bitter brown liquid. The syrup’s other principal ingredient is phosphoric acid, which adds acidity and is made by diluting burnt phosphorus (created by heating phosphate rock in an arc-furnace) and processing it to remove arsenic.

A much smaller proportion of the syrup is flavors... vanilla, cinnamon, coca-leaf which comes from South America and is processed in a unique US government authorized factory in New Jersey to remove its addictive stimulant cocaine; and kola nut...The final ingredient is caffeine, a stimulating alkaloid that can be derived from the kola nut, coffee beans and other sources...The finished product is transported by road to a distribution center and then to my local Vons. This tool chain, which spans bauxite bulldozers, refrigerators, urethane, bacteria and cocaine, produces 70 million cans of Coca-Cola each day...

That's the way you should look at them. They are fine for every once in a while, but they are not something you should have every day. If you gave them up entirely for a period of time, you can do it again. Just switch to unsweetened ice tea so you don't have to give up your caffeine fix at the same time. When your body gets used to not having as much sugar all the time, it won't crave it as much. Commercial soft drinks taste way too sweet for me because I never drink them. On the few occasions I do partake, I make my own and reduce the sugar content.

Just drink water. Or some herb tea, iced or hot, that you make yourself. My favorite for iced tea is chai rooibos.

Then, once a week or so, indulge yourself. But not with those soft drinks. Make your own:

A glass, some ice, some sparkling water, a little juice. Just a little juice, since juice comes with its own walloping natural sugar.

It gives the bubbles that I often crave when I think about soda, without all the rest of the crap. Once you get used to it, a commercial soda tastes way too sweet.

Or, if you don't like the sparkling water alternative, treat yourself with one of these, which isn't quite a coke, but comes without HFCS or artificial sweetener:

It wasn't easy, kicking the Coke habit, and it is a habit, in a way. I had to go cold turkey because I'd just been diagnosed with type 2 diabetes. I had no choice than to cut it out completely. I looked for a substitute drink for awhile before I settled on iced tea. Gold Peak was the best... guess who makes it? Yep. It's a Coca-Cola product. But I got tired of that after awhile, then tried their iced tea lemonade. LOVED that, but it didn't solve the sugar problem. So I tried Crystal Lite, which is what I drink now. I mix one packet of iced tea, and one packet of lemonade to make a big pitcher, and it tastes awesome. And, as far as I can tell, it's much healthier. I rarely if ever drink any "pop" any more. In fact, there's a 16-oz bottle of Coke in the fridge right now. Unopened. Got it free with a slab of ribs from Giant Eagle on the 4th of July. It's still there in the fridge. I'm saving it for when I need to clean off my battery again.

You probably need to try healthier drinks until you find something else you like. Water, of course, is the best, but it rarely satisfies me. I hope you don't have the same problem. Good luck, I know it's not easy. But you can do it.

I also have an Iced Tea maker (got it as a wedding gift in 1995). I'm too impatient for sun tea; the machine cranks out a big pitcher in about 20 minutes. Sometimes I add a few flavored herbal tea bags in with the regular tea bags, for variety.

I quit drinking soda cold turkey several years ago. Now it tastes entirely like chemicals. Good luck!

I recently read that Pepsi has still not removed the cancer-causing element that's in their caramel coloring.

Also, I disagree with the poster upthread who says addicts don't care what's in their poison. Education does work in some cases, and I say this as someone who has worked with smoking cessation. In fact, education has a longer lasting effect than any of the other techniques that help people quit habits.

Since Denninimi says she wants to quit permanently, education might be the pillar of her strategy.

A highly recommended book is Moss's Fat Sugar Salt. It tells the story of how Coke and Pepsi increased the sales of their product dramatically over the past few decades. Once you read it, you don't want to feel like a sucker for their strategies and it makes it that much easier to quit.

Denninimi, if you do go for a strategy of having only one or two sodas a week, see if you can get Diet-Rite. I can't recall their sweetener, but it is one that has less or none of the cancer-causing chemicals in it. It's not easy to find--the big two have done a great job of pushing them off the shelves.

25. Here's how I have kicked it, a few times...
Mon Jul 29, 2013, 11:55 AM
Jul 2013

though now it is Dr Pepper, Coke tastes weird to me now. I'm going to be battling both the soda addiction AND quitting smoking...

I'll be joining you in your struggle: as of today! I need to quit smoking, shooting for November's Great American smokeout day.. but I know that when I do quit smoking, I will put on about 15 lbs, and that will shoot up my BP even more, increase my stroke potential... so my first goal is to quit the soda, and drop 15 lbs or more BEFORE I quit smoking....then battle to not gain it back. Starting out overweight is dangerous for me... all the smoke out programs say fuggeddaboutit, the weight isn't as bad, but I can't stand my lack of mobility now being 20 lbs overweight, and the negative impact on my health and self-image of more weight gain would have me smoking again...I know how I am. And I know, without soda, I WILL easily drop 15 lbs...been there before, done that... and that will make me feel empowered, not deprived, and that is CRUCIAL to beating addiction.

Here is how I have quit in the past.
1) Stock up: lots of bottled water, like 3 cases. Put plenty in the fridge to chill.
frozen lemon juice to make lemonaide
my favorite tea: Luzianne tea bags, pitcher size and regular size... no bitterness to this tea
sugar and fresh lemons
2) Make and keep a large pitcher of ice tea and one of lemonaide on hand, as well as the chilled ice water. When temptation strikes, at least my laziness doesn't get the better of me with other options in my face.

3) Whatever you do, DON'T tell yourself you are NOT drinking soda; that will immediately make you want one Instead, say to yourself that your body needs some water and some vitamin C, so you are going to drink some water FIRST. When I am drinking water, of course, I am not drinking soda, but I don't think of it that way; I won't let myself.

4) First day, I drink one bottle of water. Second day, two. I am still drinking Dr. P, but a bit less since some of the time I am drinking water. I drink SOMETHING from the time I get up to the time I go to bed...my whole family does, multiple generations of us, must be genetic or something.

5) I start to feel good about drinking the water, and actually with just that my body feels better, too... this encourages me to want to drink more water. AS LONG AS I HAVE A COLD BOTTLE NEXT TO ME, MY LAZINESS WILL OVERCOME MY SODA ADDICTION FOR A GOOD LONG WHILE. Using one weakness to battle another, LOL.

6) After about a week, I actually start to lose some weight, and I can feel that weight loss, and it feels great and I want to do more.... I get on the scale about 5 times a day, having placed it in an area I frequently walk by. All the 'rules' say not to do this, but hey, it works for me.

7) I substitute iced tea for some of the Dr. P's I would usually drink. I use a TON of sugar in the iced tea...even with ridiculous amounts, it is still less than the Coke. I am addicted to HCFS, not just the caffeine, and this helps me 'come down'. I love fresh lemon, so I keep fresh lemon to put in the tea, as this is a 'treat' for my tastebuds, and ergo, for my psyche... this is NOT a punishment, but a pleasure, doing something I enjoy for myself.

8) I also alternately substitute the lemonaide, again with a good bit of sugar... I use two cups of sugar in a large pitcher with one bottle of Minute Maid lemon juice. Yummy. I've already polished off three 12 oz glasses this morning...in two hours. But now, all that sugar makes me WANT to drink water, so that's what I am doing right now. I don't have any urge for soda....I have an urge for water. Drinking the water slakes my thirst; it is ice cold, it is enjoyable...creating another little 'hook' in my brain, another memory of ummmmmm water is good, feels good, tastes good.... in other words, creating a substitute positive 'hook' in my brain to breed good habits (while completely ignoring/not thinking about the bad.)

9) Over time, when I drink nearly no Dr. P, or no Dr. P at all, then I will gradually drop the sugar in my ice tea. I will be motivated by the pleasure of my weight loss to do this; it becomes a fun challenge that I KNOW I can do, I feel empowered (not deprived). Then I get myself down to no sugar, just lemon. Then I end up drinking mostly just water with lemon, or just water.

The main theme here is that I am trying to create pleasurable sparks in my brain, that will help it create a new 'addiction', and I never ever allow myself to think of the negative "I can't have soda" or "I am denying myself soda" .... I just don't think about that at all.

And that is how I will have to battle my almost 3 packs a day cig habit, too. First thing is I had to get my husband to realize he can never, ever, ever tell me don't smoke, or yell at me for smoking, or tell me 'don'tdrink soda'....because that HURTS my efforts, it doesn't help. That's how my brain works. It took me months to get him to see this, but finally, he seems to be waking up. As soon as he shut up and stopped saying Don't drink soda, I have now cut out much of it and am enjoying my lemonaide and water. As for the cigs, I have to start counting them today, and this week we will be deep cleaning upholstery since I have smoked in the house. My car was a real ashtray, and I wasn't sure how to get that horrific a smell out, but that got 'solved' as I totaled my car on Thursday (no one was hurt). New car, no smokes.

Here is one negative bit of information about soda: it can expedite the death of your kidneys greatly.... perhaps the chemicals, but definitely the sodium. My husband is in chronic kidney disease stage 4, and may need dialysis any day. He now can eat only a very limited number of foods, in limited amounts, and can drink only water, ever (he could have a small glass of tea, but that would mean NOT eating some fruit or other positive nutrient instead, and it isvery hard for him to get enough calories now as it is, since he is 6'7".) YOU DON'T WANT TO GO THERE. Life as a kidney patient is pure hell; so bad my mother in law chose death over dialysis (at age 82). The sodium in soda alone will kill you, period.

Good luck to the both of us! God being an addict sucks!

PS: Last week, which I spent drinking just one bottle of water a day, sometimes two, I lost two pounds. I am already feeling better.

weeks.

Now I usually have unsweetened iced tea with about 1/2 cup lemonade added (a not-quite-Arnold Palmer), or club soda with some pomegranate juice, or some papaya juice (divine). Sometimes I'll get Pellegrino's flavored carbonated drinks - the Grapefruit and Blood Orange are the best - and have about 1/4 can mixed with club soda.

Mostly, though, just water and lemon (lots of lemon because I'm a fool for citrus)

However, if I have a splitting headache or need to stay up for a long drive and decent coffee is nowhere to be found, I'll get a diet Coke, but only if I have some food with it (like french fries) - I don't like the taste of diet Coke by itself. Blech.

You can do it. And don't be too hard on yourself if you backslide once in a while. You're heading in the right direction.

I decided Sunday night, after reading the ones that were posted to that point, I was going to quit Cold Turkey on Monday morning.

Which I did. So, roughly 36 hours now without a pop. A couple of observations: 1) I think I feel better, more energy; 2) I haven't had a hardcore craving yet.

I have been drinking iced tea with lemon, no sweetener, and ice water. I have some seltzer water at home, will do that tonight for the fizz.

I have the same problem! So glad I found this thread!

I appreciate the OP opening the discussion and what a discussion! Lots of info and kind encouragement!

Good luck to all who are dealing with this insidious addiction!
