Except for pictures in newspapers and news footage, has anyone here seen a box of Twinkies since they came back?

(3,655 posts)but don't really care for them. My favorite was the banana flip. That tasteless cream in the twinkle doesn't do much for me.

(1,569 posts)Don't know why they went with tasteless over the banana filling, but I didn't miss twinkies in the least.

(50,560 posts)Before World War II, there was no such thing as "artificial banana flavoring" - if something was banana flavored, there were bananas in it. (It wouldn't take many; banana is such an overpowering flavor that a little goes a very long way.) When WWII broke out, every banana we could bring into the country was diverted to the war effort, and Hostess couldn't get any. So...tasteless it was.
You know why banana pudding became the dessert of the South? Turns out that when they started importing bananas into the US, they'd grow soft and mushy on their way through Deep South heat and humidity - totally unsuited to eating out of hand, perfect for making pudding. Add a few vanilla wafers and you're good.

(4,851 posts)Our local deli had a funny idea, free twinkie a week for a year (which I figure costs him about $5) for the best twinkie costume. About 15 kids showed up dressed up. He had a face painter and a person making ballon animals there. We stayed for 40 minutes and had a nice time. We buy all of our deli from thsi guy for reasons like this. He is always doing stuff for the families that shop there. He is more money than the big chains, but he is a great guy and we love his store.
