I know nobody will believe this, but the first time I played this on youtube, it was late evening... suddenly lightning lit up the windows and thunder was crashing! Really added to the atmosphere of the song!

I've only heard the Simon & Garfunkel version as a youngster and developed a disliking to it because my parents always played it and it sounded so very depressing to me. That they were on the verge of a divorce and my life was in tumult just made the mood worse than the already evocative tone of the song. Same with "Knights in White Satin' by the Moody Blues. Hearing either of those songs made me nearly sick to my stomach.

This version seems so much truer to the real intended spirit of the song.

the song goews back to the 16th century or so. In it, the young woman asks her lover to perform three impossible tasks, "then he'll be a true love of mine". I'm also happy you rediscovered it, and sorry for the bad memoies.... time has a way of healing.

That is one old song. When I was in choir in middle school we used to sing that.

... on me too. The courage of love....

In Irish culture, the symbolism of the three sisters has a much deeper meaning that I don't have time to go into here.
