Just the other day I made some egg salad and instead of pickles or relish I added some chow chow. It was actually pretty good.

(4,243 posts)It contains cabbage, green tomatoes, cucumbers, peppers, onions, carrots, and some kind of spice added to boiling vinegar water.
In my family when my mom made soup beans (bean soup) my family would mix it in with the beans in their bowl or plate.

(4,243 posts)I asked her about it and she said the origin (for her and her family anyway) was when the last of the vegetables were taken from the garden they were made into chow chow and canned for the winter.

(4,243 posts)I've heard of people putting really hot peppers in it, and some other things I don't remember. But yeah, I think almost everyone makes it differently.

(39,343 posts)They had all kinds of relish, jellies, and jams. It was near Gainesville and is called Jaemor Farms. That was the only place I've seen it sold. They had spicy and sweet.
