If I need to get up early I'll find it impossible to sleep. It's like Murphy's law.

You might try it. Listen to Coast to Coast AM (syndicated, and in many areas, I think) turned really low so you can just barely hear it, on a radio alarm that will shut off after an hour. The host, guests, and callers talk about interesting and/or weird stuff and if you're tired, but can't be bothered by a million thoughts zipping around your brain, this will allow you to relax and drift off.

We used to have a great talk show station out of San Francisco that my husband and I listened to at any hour, but some jokers from Atlanta took it over and fired all the talk show hosts.

or, if your abdomen feels tense
lie on your back and breathe slowly and deeply, letting your abdomen relax and stick out like your chest as you inhale.

and if your feet feel scrunched up, stretch out your toes the way a cat does~
